1989 Cinelli Supercorsa

Well here she is in all her glory. Some of you may have looked at my "Should I face my BB shell thread" or Andy_K's Cornucopia of Italian awesomeness thread, and caught a few glimpses of this frame. 1989 by serial number; it came with a headset mounted but I am convinced the frame was otherwise never built up or ridden. It had a tiny paint chip on one cable guide and a couple of very tiny specks of missing paint elsewhere. It was also missing one of the "pearl" buttons on the seat cluster. I got a new set direct from Cinelli at a much cheaper price than the ebay robbery price.

Built with Campy Record 8 speed, although the crank and post are Chorus. Wheelset is H+Son TB14 rims with what I think are Athena hubs. I'm already thinking of something lighter and quicker, as this bike I think deserves it.

First ride was 2 days ago, chilly and pretty windy, maybe not fair for displaying a bike's best qualities. Based on the few ride reports I've seen, I expected a twitchy, criterium like ride, but that was not the case. It felt best in the saddle, pounding out tempo. Stable descender, held steady at 38 mph in a pretty vicious head/crosswind. Decent, but not outstanding climber. I spent about 1/3 of my ride in the drops, about normal, and thought it was a little uncomfortable, my back a little sore and I wondered if maybe the frame wasn't a good fit. As I'm tweaking the setup a little this AM, I notice that the bars the deeper drop 66-40's instead of the 64-40's I thought I was putting on. Derp.

Really elegant build...tasteful and with a fun looking gruppo. Bet it rides nicely.

artclone 11-01-17 09:47 AM

Beautiful! I like the seat tube stripe. Is that on all of them? If so I never noticed.

I'm sure you'll be able to tune it in even if it isn't just the bar drop. Great build.

I think the stripe is standard on the more modern (80's and later) ones. I think the fit will be fine, I measured a couple of my other bikes today and tweaked it a little. I have a set of 64-40's, just have to take a deep sigh, get back to work, and put it on. I ride in the drops enough to really want the right set of bars on there.

Aaron, the Campy Record 8 group is IMO one of the best they ever made. I think it saddles the classic and modern divide nicely. Took me about 2 minutes to get it dialed in when I installed it.

Agree with you...in many ways Campy 8 is my favorite ever gruppo (or the alloy 9sp). Nice firm shifts, great front trim and looks awesome without overbearing logos. That was a Campy homerun.

Super color, super build, Super Bike!

VERY, VERY NICE! When you say "lighter and quicker" wheels, what do you have in mind? Would be interested since I have an Olmo that has heavy wheels holding it back...

I’m not quite sure yet, although the advantage of the 8 speed cassette and 130 spacing is I can use a more modern wheel set. I have Reynolds Solitude and DT Swiss/Velocity sets in the closet which weigh less than than the rear wheel of the current set but they wouldn’t look right on this build.

Love those tiny Cinelli logos stamped in the lower HT lug!

As an idea for lighter but still classic looking wheels, Pacenti will be offering a 700C version of it’s “Brevet” rim. My LBS (Free Range Cycles in Seattle) contacted Pacenti, who said they’d be available in January. Claimed weight will be 430 gm.

I’ve got the 650B version of the Brevets and like them very much. Actual measured weight was very close to claimed; single eyelets.

Aren't they cool? They're on the upper lug too!

Thanks for the tip on the Pacenti's. I looked up the TB14's and they are listed at 490 g, a little lighter than I expected. Caliwild, if you're looking for your Olmo, the Mavic Open Pro is listed at 420g and if you want to stay true to an '80's bike the MA40 and it's close sibling MA2 are similar, I think probably within 20g or so of that.

Ride report update: took the Cinelli out on some twisty descents today and she really strutted her stuff. Very crisp handling!

Beautiful

Bikerider007 11-01-17 03:29 PM

That's awesome you could find that little stay plug or cap at Cinelli.

The stripe on seat tube started in 80' with the new logo. They moved the word Cinelli up the side a little higher about 83' when the other changes with lugs etc. were done. Initially it was closer to the bb but could not be seen well on the drive side.

Great bike, group and color.

Great bike, group and color.

Slight correction...they moved the logo up quite a bit, from right at the BB to above the FD braze-on. It was at the bottom of the stripe before that, and that occurred sometime during the 1985 run, if pictures are to believed. I have a 1984, and it is at the bottom. I've seen verified 1985 models with it in both places.

Great bike, if you have the ability, can you measure the seat and head tube angles?

dunrobin 11-01-17 04:08 PM

Stunning bike, nice build. I have 8 speed zondas I prefer over my 8 speed open pros.

My polished TB14’s weighed an actual 505gm on a digital scale, so slightly heavier then spec’d, and I would never describe these wheels as “heavy”, just not quite as light as the narrower Open Pros that preceded them. They are lovely rims that I frequently recommend, and have remained true for over 6000 miles so far. Because of their double eyelets and perceived strength, I’ve moved them over to the bike that will be the travel bike with front bag and panniers.

Bikerider007 11-01-17 04:32 PM

jiangshi both CR and Velo-retro show it as '83. I believe that is the same or a similar timeline. I haven't seen either 84' or 85' to know for sure though.

Beautiful! Just Beautiful! I like your choices for the build. Now you just need to find the right lighting to capture how deep that paint really is.

Here are pics with my crude device, I'm interpolating that as a 74 STA and 73 HTA +/- 1 degree ha ha. I measure the top tube at 56 cm c-c, seat tube 55 cm c-c, down tube 62 cm c-c, head tube 13.6 end to end.

Yeah pretty gloomy out today - that paint does have a nice pearlescent quality to it.
dunrobin - good to hear that about the Zondas. I've considered those or Shamals, although a set of those will seriously up the bling factor!

exmechanic89 11-01-17 05:45 PM

It's a beauty. Sure looks to me like it would in fact be an excellent climber.

Thank you. I believe that is different than my 55cm (ST, c-c) 1984 SC. Memory tells me 55 square and 73* ST. I'll let you know when it comes back from the repaint. I know, but I bought it new in 1984, and it was put away wet too many times. Last new bike I bought. I want it pretty again, and with two water bottle braze ons ;)

That's nice, but clearly the wrong size for you.

Tell you what: as a favor, I'll take it off your hands, just for your own good. Will pick it up at SOTR in May. Deal?

Deal - just bring along that Pelizzoli in exchange and we’ll be all square.

BTW bring your big tires next year. They “repaved” Thunder Ridge and did not do a good job. Park service budget cuts I guess.

thinktubes 11-01-17 09:01 PM

That turned out swell! Thinking it would really shine with a "light, but not too light" wheelset.

How much more riding season do you have there? It would drive me nuts if I had to park that begore I got it dialed in.

Thanks. You can ride year round here. There will be stretches of a week or so in Jan/Feb when it will be bitter cold or snow on the ground, but you can still get in a few rides. I rode 300 miles last February
