How about some filthy bikes?

Everyone posts pics of their babies. Clean, waxed and shiny. Let's see the bikes that are ridden hard and put away wet.
I'll start with my Moser. This is my salty road and rain bike. She won't get a cleaning until spring thaw. That's when I can put my garden hose out.
The long shot makes her look ok. But the close-ups...

There's proof right there that fenders only provide so much protection...

The mudflap doesn't extend very low, so you can see where its effectiveness ends just below the bottle cage... the crank/bottom bracket area on mine stays much cleaner with a proper mudflap than it did before. :thumb:

But that means I would have to ride my bikes.

Here in eastern Iowa, we've had a few days that were just warm enough to melt the snow and ice on the road... leaving wet salt and sand to get sprayed everywhere.

[dirt mtb]

What are you using for a back brake on that bike?

Nothing! It's a fixed-gear. :D

Cool! Looks like a beast (in the best possible way) with those studded tires.

Thanks! I call it "The Mule" because it's an ugly mutant bike that does my hauling. :D

Ah man just saw this thread after I washed the mtb yesterday! Got a chemical sprayer as recommended to spray the bike down, but it was so crusted and bad I had to use an old hand rag and dish soap!

Oh well next few days are going to be awesome!:thumb: I'm sure I can pick up enough crude left over on the roads tomorrow. Here's the cleaned up before pic!

AZORCH 01-23-18 06:50 PM

No photos, so I guess it didn't happen, but my bright pink Bernard Carre braved the wet roads and muddy byways and paths over the weekend and now there's a thick coating of rusty red Ozarks sludge over about everything.

We did 40-odd fixed-gear miles that day, maybe a dozen or so of them over dirt and clay roads in the south end of Greenwood County. It never stopped raining and the temperature never got above 42 degrees. One of my favorite rides ever.

does white "filth" still count?

I had a great photo opportunity a few years ago. It was March 1st and the roads were clean, although there was a bit of snow on the way. Well, it started snowing shortly after I got on the road. I was amazed at how fast it fell and how much it just stuck to everything! After an hour of this silliness, I cut the ride short.

Good thing, lol, that 990 mounted brake, if you had one, would be useless in the snow/rain/muck :p

I've heard they had a reputation for jamming up with mud and whatever else. Since I almost never throw anything away, I carefully put it all in a plastic bag just in case I change my mind down the road. ;)

I generally choose not to go out in crappy weather if I can help it. Unless I've paid for it beforehand, of course. (Being Dutch kinda does that to you.) Like Eroica rides. The Limburg edition has had a 100% rain score so far.

We've planned Brittania this year. That should yield some great pics for this thread. :( :)

Disgusting. Except for northbend.

jimmuller 01-28-18 05:44 PM

Yeah, okay. We took the tandem out today. The thing about a tandem is that when you are done riding you have to clean up two BBs and two cranks and lots more frame tubes.

These pics were from only halfway through the ride. It got worse.

I had a good beer after the bike was cleaned up!
