Bikes: Mostly English - predominantly Raleighs

They did make them in '81. (just saying).

I found this blog with one shown in the colors you describe, claims to be a 1977 Super Gran Prix, Japan-made model.

Some info I've gleaned shows that many Made-in-Japan Raleighs used a serial number format with a beginning N, followed by a number for the year, then followed by a letter for the month, then 4 numbers. According to some info, that third digit, what you show as a "5", may instead be an "S", indicating December. Check your serial number and make sure that it doesn't say N1S1479.

Here's another thread in Bikeforums showing a Made-In-Japan model with this Japan serial number format, post number 1, second photo.

I think the original serial number that you gave may be correct. N1B1479

This format of serial number is consistent with some TI Raleigh USA bicycles from the early 1980s.

IF so, this is a Japanese serial number, not Nottingham England.

The first digit "1" is for the year 1981, and the letter "B" is for February. The date of frame manufacture.
