Ross was playing to the same tune back then with the chromed Mt. Whitney and at least one other model.
These were built with early mtb geometry, big heft and .833" (21.1mm) stem quill diameter.
BMX influence I'm thinking.
These days, Mongoose covers both the big-box stores, bike shops and internet sales with a wide range of bikes. Mine came from Kmart two years ago, so required a pretty big handful of mods:

When I was a kid, the neighbor kid had Mongoose stuff, Ashtabula fork... but it was all fancy stuff he was proud of.
A lot of the more recent Mongoose stuff is more BSO oriented... but I recall reading something like Mongoose makes stuff from BSO to Boutique.
