Rare? 40h Campy Hubs

I acquired a couple boxes of components recently. I was taking a closer look today and noticed a set of wheels I got have 40 hole Campy Nuovo Record hubs.
Are these fairly rare? Were they a special order item? Any info out there would be appreciated.
Thanks.

At one time it was common to package hubs and rims 32 hole front & 40 hole rear.

This was particularly true in Britain.

You should keep them as they go with your handle perfectly, they are by definition "vintagerando". My Merz touring bikes have them as he was very specific with his builds for strength and longevity. I have modern 40 spoke wheels on my winter/rain/commuter as they require no truing ever. Tough, yes, heavy, probably, no matter they ride very nicely and were a great bargain.

Put me in line for them as well please.

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.

They're not common, but not unknown, either. I put a 40-hole Tipo rear hub on my loaded touring bike many years ago.

Are these high flange or low? I recently purchased a touring bike that had 40H high flange Record front and rear.

Astute.

And a logical arrangement, frankly.

Not sure how common the Campy 40º are; have seen a few, but not that often.

I still like the idea a 40º RR wheel for loaded touring (well over 300lbs for rider/bike/cargo), aiming to run 36/40 on the front dynamo/beefy build setup for my commuter/tourer/monstercross - thanks to picking up a 40º Velocity RR hub on discount from my local wholesaler, and a leftover 40º Mavic A719 from the rafters of my tiny little neighbourhood LBS.

Mine are low flange.

Trek 710, frame built late 1980. I don't have a pic of the complete (it no longer is) bike.

I don't know much about Treks, but it is said many were sold as frames (710) vs. complete (71x). So at this point it may be impossible to know if the wheels were original to the bike.

I would suspect it did not unless they were part of the build.

Campagnolo made 40 + 32 combinations for the British market. Here is a original NOS set the from 1960's:

I was going to use them for my Holdsworth but I couldn't bring myself to lace them up, so I found a used pair instead:

I'm not sure if there was any advantage to the 40+32 over the 36+36 combination but it persisted for years. The rear wheels on tandems were often laced with 48 spokes.

Bikes: roadsters, club bikes, fixed and classic

40 hole front suggests tandem track. Does the rear hub accept a lockring?

Ooops, second answer

For the first year or two of the operation Trek offered only framesets, no cycles.

There were three models of road frame and that was it.

Mid 80s Specialized Expeditions came with 40/36. Presumably to handle the additional weight of the touring gear in the back. Rims were Super Champions. Can’t recall the hubs off hand.

Expeditions would have had Specialized sealed bearing hubs- Probably rebranded Suzue.

The Schwinn Voyageur SP (for at least the 84 & 85 model years came with 40/36 Suntour sealed bearing hubs- rebranded Sunshine/Sanshin hubs.

From the Models 2XX, 5XX, 7XX through the 9XX complete bikes were available from Trek's first production runs with 700 & 900 available as frame-sets.

Now that's the kind of parts you like to find in box of parts. Rare or not they will be a nice feature on a vintage touring bike. Nice score.

I won a set of Nuovo Tipo high flange hubs way back at a race, 36/40. I built them up as training wheels. I could not kill them.
