Help: Can't Dial In FD

Help .I need somebody....

Early 80s Nishiki International. Two rings. .SunTour indexed Power Shifters .Broke the SunTour NSL FD.

Tried to replace it with a Schwinn GT250 FD . indexed out to big chainring fine but would not retract to small ring. Every time I tried to move the FD back, I'd get slack in the cable. Kept taking up slack but still couldn't get the FD to return . Gave up and bought another NSL FD. Waiting for delivery .

Bike had been sitting for some time. Shifter didn't move smoothly . Ran new cable and tightened/ loosened shifter but that didn't work either

Thoughts?

When the NSL comes in, clean and lube it well, back out the adjusting screws a bit, and mount it with the chain off. Adjust it to the rings, then install the chain. After that, should be fairly straightforward tweaking.

Eyes are the best tools to align it, IMO.

Thanks . It may not matter but after thumbing through a few posts here, it's a '76. Rode nice until I broke the FD .

Is the Schwinn FD a reverse normal?

Does the spring on the FD move?

Sounds like top-pull and with frozen pivots.

Suntour derailers are also prone to cable slippage at the clamp, because the screw often takes seemingly a LOT of turning after the clamping starts but before the bolt reaches full torque.
I have never figured out why this is, but it seems pretty Suntour-specific and I can recall many times thinking that I had perhaps stripped the pinch bolt threads using the 8mm spanner (never actually the case though).

The seller with the replacement NSL states its a bottom pull . Before I broke the old NSL, it did work but was stiff The pivots of the replacement Schwinn seemed to move fine prior to installing

Actually sounds like the "low" set screw may have needed to be backed off. I will take this back you were able to get it into position on the small ring, and it just wouldn't return (read the symptoms three times but not 100% sure if that was the case or not). In that case, it could have been a weak spring (I think the most likely given the description), or a balky pivot.

1st, check everything for tightness & unchanged position, starting at the levers. Just went through similar mumble making on a Grand Jubile mixte & eventually found shifter clamp not tight enough & had moved slightly, then found cable sheath not fully seated in stop, then found Derailleur clamp also not quite tight enough & it had then moved slightly. Keep at it, you will fix it eventually. Don

yes .It wouldn't return back. When I moved the shifter, it didn't move and created slack in the cable . Pivots seemed OK.
