We lost another great frame builder today, Dario Pegoretti dies at age 62.

He was kind enough a couple of years ago to respond back to my email about his role in the Giordana bikes. Pretty cool that he took the time to talk to little ol' me.

Thought I came across one of his bikes a couple years ago, but something was off. I reached out and he asked for pics. He saved me some money and this was when he was on vacation or doing other business! His out of office email said he was away for two weeks, but he promptly responded several times. Sad, he was fairly young

After reading an interview with him and finding out more about his ideas on building and painting for customers made me really want one of his frames. Maybe one day.

A very sad day indeed. The man was one of the great visual artists of our era, and was just getting settled into an awesome new studio. This on top of being a legendary framebuilder. Hoping there's an afterlife and you can continue La Dolce Vita, Dario.

I had just received a Nitto Craft stem for my Luigino and was planning on swapping out tonight. I got the sad news earlier and took out the Peg for a tribute ride. What a great loss.

Having turned 61 earlier this week, I can say that he died waaaaay too young. Big loss for the whole community.

I've never known much about Mr. Pegoretti, but noticed that when his name came up in conversation, it was always with great respect.
The first one of his bikes that I saw was at the 2009 NAHBS, in the Brooks booth. He had built a frame that was used to display some of Brooks products....
More recently, one of the local shops had a "classic bike" show, inviting folks to display their beloved vintage and steel bikes. Among them was a Pegoretti! I was stunned! The paint scheme is a bit low key but still very cool.

Wow --- he battled with cancer earlier from what I understood.
I was told my Pinarello Opera frameset was contracted out to the Pegoretti shop -- (the Opera was the last steel frameset and the reasoning told to me was Pinarello was concentrating on alloy, scandium and carbon frames at the time so farmed out the welding of the Opera frameset - time frame early to mid '00 s )
Now I am stepping up my research a bit to either confirm or deny this as I am curious, but information is pretty scarce on these

He was as well known for his artistic talent as well as frames. I read somewhere that if you wanted a custom paint job you could tell him what you like, but thats it. He would paint and give you what came to him. A true artist.

He had a couch at NAHBS Austin. I got in early, and was too intimidated to go over and say hi. (He was probably the only person smoking in the convention center, and no one seemed to mind).
I didn't meet him, but I got to listen to him chat, well before show opening, with Richard Sachs. They were coming at the subject from two different directions, but under the words, there was a thick foundation of respect for the person, work notwithstanding.
Peloton magazine had one of the best articles ever about him and his approach. It's no wonder Robin Williams owned his frames. So much more to it than a bike.
The world will miss such a person, often overlooked because he built bicycles. He built a lot more than that.
At BAMF in High Point, NC, two of his frames, complete builds, were on display, unguarded, in the often empty Civic Center. He was that kind of guy. It was not an issue. The event, Bicycle-Art Meets Form, was pretty much what he was about.

He had a stong sense of humor, was unique and creative and it showed in his work.

Dario was definitely one of a kind....and will be missed. RIP
As someone wrote on another forum, one thing that went with him was a boatload of knowledge. He built frames for pros for years, those pros rode the bikes and gave him feedback which he used to improve the bikes. Supposedly in just one year he built 25 different frames for Pantani who was searching for that certain 'something'. While it was common at one time for builders to get that feedback there aren't many left with that type of knowledge any more.
