So I snatched a Pohliaghi. Its been on my list for a long time.

This is not a Sante Pohliaghi, but Basso Pog circa 1993 according to the serial number. Sante originally gave the rights to Rossin who built them throughout most of the 80s, then onto the Basso bros, whom he actually gave all of his "secrets" to, as he had a very close relationship to Alcide Basso. I am also a big fan of Basso bikes as well, so this is right up my alley. I believe Basso still markets a steel Pog frame to this day.

This bike is in very good condition, the paint and decals are mint. It looks very lightly used. The tubing is Basso Tubing Concept, which is new for me, but it is a CrMo and it feels extremely light. I believe Mannesman made the tubes. Hoping for a 20lb build here. Also looking to go 9 or 10 speed.

Being that it is all black, my thoughts are leaning towards all black components, from stem to crank to brakes and even wheels, everything, and then set it off with a white saddle, white cables and tape that will match decals.

I can use some thoughts and opinions. Anyone have any?😁

Lousy cell phone pics don't do the frame any justice. The lugs are quite fancy and the paint is gorgeous as well.

Yup!, going with an all black theme would be nice. Might be a good reason too to go with black wall tires. I do find silver against black always works well too, as it makes the components pop out visually, especially if the component group is rare and unusual.....

That's the only reservation I have - black wall tires! I'm a sucker for tan walls. But I have some black walls sitting around that I might try, at least temporarily.

I am in love with the Velo Orange Cru Noir Crankset in black. Just beautiful with all the drillium, but its $200. Ouch. But this frame could well be worth it. We shall see!

That VO crankset is beautiful! Kind of an homage to the Stronglight 104bis....
That will look fantastic on the bike. You might want to check group sets from Rino as they had a black and silver theme on one of them, IIRC.....

I think it will look great with a black/black setup. Matching the saddle, cables and bar tape will match the decals perfectly.

Thanks chombi. It really does look like a Stronglight and I'm really in love with it. Keep telling me, "money doesn't matter, money doesn't matter"!

I will be looking into Rino. I think I am looking for alternatives to Campy for this one. Thanks for bringing that one up. Lets get crazy!

Yeah, I love black bikes, and this is my second. Black would be the very best contrast to to your recently denuded Chesini.

Glad you like the black-on-black theme, and I guess you approve of the VO crank with drillium. Lovely, classic look IMHO.

I will be slowly shopping for parts now, which is half the fun, and keep you updated on the build. And I promise better pics! Yeah, the ones so far are horrible!

That's really nice but if your weight watching it's 645 grams. Kinda makes me want to have the arms on this gipiemme andonized black. Suntour Cyclone might be a good derailleur option very light with nice black accents.

Nice bike! I have a very similar one, however, built in 2013 with oversize Mannsman tubing. I decided to put a Ultegra 9 speed group with Rolf wheels and it
weighs 19 lbs. I sure is a nice riding bike...enjoy!

Wow, very pretty!

Love the look. But I think I'm going alittle more modern in my setup. I want to do a 9 or 10 speed with Ergo shifters, which might take me into Campy territory for deraileurs and brifters I think.

Am I wrong, or am I limited to Campy, Shimano, or Sram if I want to go modern with 9 speeds or better?

Love the red. Very tasteful build. Love the fact that its a sub 20 lb steel bike. I'm hoping to be there as well. I believe the Basso Tubing Concept was made by Manessman as well. The frame looks very much like mine except for the seat stays. Yours are fast-back style, and is definitely the more popular style for this frame. Mine, with the more standard seat cap stays, are more rare and I can't find to many like mine, or any! This frame did come from Germany, so maybe this style never made it to our shores.

Nice bike. I say go with silver components, IMO they make the black frame stand out whereas the black ones make it all blend together.

I'm also a fan of Basso bikes, and I think the Pogliaghi bikes are a great homage. I too have never seen those seatstays...pretty ccol

For mine however, I would like to go all-black as well, except go with a white saddle, white cables and white bar tape. That would go with the white decaling. I think that would really make the bike pop.

My thought is modern right now.

9 or10 speed Campy deraileurs and ergo shifters, but I'm loving the VO crankset I posted above and I might spend the bucks on it. Brakes could be Modolo or Miche as they both have many models in black, they look nice and my guess is they work well enough. But I am open to other ideas as well.

If I go modern am I limited to Campy, Shimano, or Sram?

I think you could make a case for any of them, or a mix for that matter. It's all about what YOU want. For me, an Italian frame deserves Italian components, but that's coming from a guy with a Campy tattoo on his arm

I to love all things Italian, and Campy is right at the top. I also believe that an Italian made frame would best be served by an Italian gruppo, for no other reason that it just seems correct. I'm guessing I'd like to go full Campy except for that beautiful VO crankset that I am lusting after.

My question really is, do any other component builders make a full modern 9/10 speed brifters style group, or is it just the Big 3?
