So i picked up a little consolation prize today after a bike I built up ended up having a major flaw in the frame: Mongoose All Terrain! [MENTION=79743]curbtender[/MENTION] alerted me and it was 5 minutes from work. just down the street actually- and guy was moving out. he probably would have taken less than the $50, but i did not feel like haggling on a deal. Cool shifters, decent shape--- some rust but shoudl buff out. sadly the avocet touring seat is broken as its a nice seat. and the mountech RD, no surprise, is fubared. looks pretty. I do have another fubared one so maybe together they can make one functional... but its probably gonna get a shimano XT and forget it.

this has me thinking, do we have a gratuitous "post your all chrome bikes" thread? I think this bike is gonna get fully citified with fenders and slicks - I think I can make all-terrain ironic.

Chrome bikes DOMINATE!!!

I love the look of these early ATBs. They've got all the touring braze ons like the rack and front low-rider, all the most badass components, cool touches and flairs like the biplane fork.

The only thing that sucks about them is the weight.

Get rid of the Mountech. Heck, stay away from any of the Suntour "Tech" rear derailleurs. However, the Mountech front is one of the very best.

You know what would slay on that bike? A Suntour XC/ XC Sport/ Cyclone/ LaPree triple pulley rear derailleur!!!

Blast from the past! But for the saddle and rubber, I wouldn't change a thing. I would source another Mountech. Do the routine full service and hit the trails. Components and rims really make this one fun. Cheers

Call me jealous. I had the red version of that bike and loved it. I always wanted one of the chrome ones. Unfortunately, mine was stolen.

yeah its pretty cool. quite a bit of rust on the fork which is unfortunate, but it should clean up ok, if not to showroom condition
the rest looks like just cleaning and greasing- and a different RD and we are off to the races.

I just did the wheels on the DB with same issue. About 5 pads of 0000 wool and a few hours of elbow grease, paced myself over a few days....outer spokes, cross over areas, near hubs and inside tight areas. Then took out into the sun and saw all the areas I missed on the sides of spokes! Anyway, the spokes look better than most of my other wheels now.

I got these huge bontrager cruiser tires I am gonna see if they can clear- hopefully tomorrow. since I already have the 83 stumpjumper sport with knobbies this one is gonna go another way.

[MENTION=20650]T-Mar[/MENTION] More info, when I broke it down I noticed the bi plane type fork has Akisu stamped on it. I know they made a lot of BMX forks, apparently for these as well.

These "Eighties-Bs" rock. Such a unique style. We just got an '85 Nishiki Colorado "mixte" (step-through with mid-stays), nice simple thumbies like you have, similar style stem, those first-gen cantilevers. And a wheelbase longer than a Fiat 500. Wonderful "way-back machines", they are.

get one if you don't. I love em because they are tall (I am 6'2") and super slack and long... hop on and you sort of feel like a king out in a jaunt about ones lands- I waive and nod to the peasants in their metal boxes and other lords on their steeds... but none as tall and proud as mine!

What an awesome find! Those wheels are what Mongoose called "Pro Class" and at the time were top of the line. I actually didn't know they made them for MTB as I thought they were a BMX only thing. Also if those pedals are Suntour they are pretty valuable in the BMX collectors scene and well worth more then you paid for the entire bike.
