Burgled

When i was burglurized a couple years ago the perps left dirty siringes and the police were not interested in them. They disposed of them! I lost many very fine classic road and mountain bikes as well as tools photo equipment even my clothes. They also got way more than enough for id theft as well as vehicle pinkslips and serial# of bicycles that i had documented. Because the thieves were so thorough i had no paperwork left to prove the ownership of anything. The ins co laughed all the way to the bank since without reciepts they pay you slightly above nothing.

OP's point is that he might become a potential victim of whole 'nother set of crooks by sending info to the cloud (which ultimately gets hacked) that shows who's home at his house, what they look like, what kind of valuables are there, people's routines, etc. Which could be someone in Russia or India or anywhere in the world.

Note: This forum is screwed up/crude compared to many better ones. You cannot tell here what post you are replying to. The titles do not show during your reply process, and every thread I have watched is flooded with unrelated nonsense. For all those reasons I rarely visit this forum. There HAS to be a better cyclist forum !!!

Well, you know the solution, right?

I call baloney. Had to be something else going on if they actually paid you slightly above nothing, and I guarantee you they didn't laugh, unless you gave them good reason. There are many other factors they look at besides your ability to present a receipt. I've only been doing it 30+ years.

Man I hate crooks, been robbed twice once at home and once at my shop in 95 and 98. I found out who both crooks were and even got a few things back. Guy that robbed my house got away scott free but the guy that robbed my shop and stole one new motorcycle and a customers used motorcycle was caught by me with my now hammered new motorcycle and nothing seemed to come of it, he jumped bail and that was the last I heard about it as I never heard from the courts again, that is till last yr when I got a notice in the mail. Turns out they had caught the guy again, and he was charged went to court and had a judgement of $3000 put on him that was owed to me. 20yrs, it took them 20yrs to notify me of this and that he jumped bail again not to be found to this day, thing is I know the guy & his family and could have had him again myself if I had even known about it, now I can't find him.

20 years ago, I'd have helped you with that matter. These days, I'm lazier and try to keep on the righter side most of the time.

Unfortunately, lots of crooks stay as crooks for all their lives......
It is what they mostly grew up as, and changing them is close to impossible in a lot of cases. Pretty much their personality....
Bad thing is, most of them are desperate and feel they have nothing to lose, so personally confronting these guys can be pretty dangerous.
You will just need to move on and take measures to prevent being victimized by such again.

If you hit them, you are guilty of assault. Out here in California, theft is no longer a crime. You will not be arrested or prosecuted for it. People who were in prison for it have all been released.

Crooks vote in some states.....just look at who is trying to make this happen all over, and you know what/who the problem really is.

In all seriousness though, in my home the guy got away with over $8000 worth of goods which I had receipts for and my insurance paid or replaced everything. In my shop it was $7500 worth of goods that wasn't covered by insurance, here anything over 5 grand and you are being arrested at least.

No, be realistic. I may live in California but this isn't "Hollywood".

Yes. BTDT.
I was walking back to the van with a friend, from a party.
Caught a man who'd already broken into my VW bus, side door open, rear hatch open, both feet on the dash, trying to pull my car stereo out.

I picked up the tire iron laying on the back, stepped to the side door, and let him have it. (those things are difficult to swing in a confined space).
Dragged him out onto the ground (he was bleeding on my carpet), and called the cops. They came, he was arrested, and went in the ambulance.
My friend decided she'd rather go home than hang with the psycho.

He sued me. The van was all I owned, having sold my nice car to get college $, and the stereo was a $249 Kenwood.

I told this to the judge. He was not impressed.
He asked if I would have done anything different?
I said, "yes, I would have run that tire iron right through him, made sure he was dead, and left."
I got the lecture on deadly force, and I advised I think I knew and exercised the difference.

He was awarded zero, but my defense costs were a lot more than $249.
In California, they'd have given him my van, I suppose.

Today, I'd probably let karma handle it, up to a point.
Then it's the tire iron.

If I may ask, from your experience, which is the better end of the iron to grip?

I'm thinking that the hub-cap end is an effective spear of sorts.

Grip the hub cap removal end. The lug "knob" on the end gives a nice weighted blow, and if you consider it an "L," the long end is easier to hold. You just have to make sure it doesn't twist in your hand as you swing it, as the heavy end wants to follow, and you risk just annoying the person with the bend of the iron. I think you lose power if you grab the shorter end, but jabbing might work, using both hands so it doesn't twist on bone. You'd want to be close in, though to try and spear anyone with a tire iron.

The problem with spearing anything is that the force of the impact must be along the length of the spear. That's hard.
Spearing is much better suited to an actual spear, or a rifle-mounted bayonet, but that still is pretty restrictive and off-balance.

Re-bar works well, if it's short, and should be swung. If you hit a bone, or a rib, it will glance off, as well.
The e-tool shovel is probably a better weapon, much easier to wield, and benefits from a cutting edge.
This, unfortunately or fortunately, has been proven in many a conflict.

The plastic stock of many modern items will break off when used as a club.
I can tell you from experience that a butt stroke with an M1 will not break it on a human.

I can also tell you from experience that the stick part of a lacrosse stick is almost the perfect size and weight to use.
Not to break bones, but to convince others to do something else instead of bothering you.
Great equalizer in a 1 on 2. Must be combined with footwork. Gives them time to think.
Famous football and lacrosse All-American Jim Brown had something to do with that.
Any guesses on that?

Yes, I was picked on as a kid, if it's not obvious.
Worked hard, focused, and remedied.

As I've said before, protecting your home/property is, in my opinion, best done with deterrents.
(I used to love the big Kenwood and Alpine decals on car windows. "STEAL MY STUFF")

Give them a reason to go elsewhere. Before rather than later.

If confronted in your home, my absolute recommendation is noise, real Mace or a "stand-off" weapon that disrupts the activity and causes flight.
There, of course, is much debate re: firearms, which I don't like, and feel should be used only with training, practice, and discretion.

Those miniature Louisville sluggers, cheap, small, can be used with one hand, etc, and tend not to be taken away and used against you (as often.)
However, you must be ready to stand there and use it, over and over, against someone who may be just as ready, if not more. Not for me.
Also, a golf club. A wedge would be easiest, cause the most problem, just don't pull on it or you may pull the person to you.

No weapon in these situations should be used without the absolute intention to destroy the target with one blow.

I remember a training class with pugil sticks. Bayonet moves were taught beforehand. You could tell who'd played baseball, just by watching.
In an early fight, one guy kicked the other in the groin, and then cracked the guy's helmet with the stick. Wait! Against the rules!
The DI's stopped the fight, to reiterate the point: do what works.

Definitely not Hollywood. 5 seconds, maybe, if it goes 15 seconds, someone better be running.
You play pattycake, you are done. Bar fights are generally for sport and release, and neither is serious.
Over a minute and most people are too tired to fight.

If you think the person(s) are experienced, leave.
If an experienced person is expecting you to do something, you've likely already lost.
There is no substitute for experience other than overwhelming power. Few have that.

The Cold War was about deterrence, because the actual violence involved was unthinkable. Same for your home.
