50 Years Ago: Feb 1969 in Bicycling! magazine

The Feb 1969 issue highlights bicycling in Japan.
In addition to the Cover and ToC, I've included the article "Cycling in Japan" and what might be the first advertisements by Maeda and Shimano on page 46.
Any of you marketing/media guys think there is any insight to be gained by the positioning of these ads on the page? I wonder what happened to Kofu Bicycle Co, what they made, and why they were positioned below Maeda and above Shimano.

It seems Bicycling! has not resurrected Bike of the Month or Equipment Review yet, but at least Fred DeLong makes an appearance with "Weight and Wisdom".

As usual, let me know if you'd like to see something else listed in the ToC and I'll do my best to send you a pdf. Just send me PM that includes your email address.

You're welcome. I started these "50 Years Ago...." postings a few months ago.
'll try to keep it going as long as I have the issues.

Thank you for putting this up. I'd like to see the article about the fellow riding his bike through Canada. Should I PM you with my email address?

Nice! That was an absolutely fascinating history of the origin of keirin racing. I learned something new.

You're welcome. Yes, I haven't seen how to attach a pdf document to a PM, so send me your email address and I'll attach one to that.

Dang, I'd take a randonneur bag for $8.98 plus shipping any day of the week! Great find!

+1 And with the support it’s only $13. That’s still only $88 in 2017 dollars. Do college trustees sell these things or what? They are definitely way out in front of inflation.

I'd be happy to pony up $8.98 each for a couple of those randonneur bags on page 26.

SpeedofLite: I'm getting a notification re. your pm but when I try to see it I get a "The administrator has restricted use of the private message system to members with less than 10 posts." message... I guess neither sending nor receiving until those 10 posts!

You must be half way there already!
Like the squirrel said when he got his tail caught in the lawn mower, it won't be long now.

@SpeedofLite sent me a PDF of the Canada article. It was about the author's ride from Vancouver, BC to Toronto. It was mostly about his reflections on the differences of people's mindsets between urban Canadians in the big three cities (he mentions Montreal several times) and the rural farmlands. He talks about "hippies" and mentions "groovy" several times. It's a great period piece which gives us more of a glimpse of a 20 something, college educated Canadian male's mind at that time as opposed to a cross country bike ride.

I made copies and passed along to two of my bike riding buddies here at the church who were seniors in H.S. in 1969. I'll be interested to hear their reflections on the article. I was just 11 at the time it was published, so younger and more of a post Viet Nam era mindset. I've attached it below. Looks as if I misspelled "Vancouver" when I saved the file.

As soon as I saw the colors and trees on the cover of the magazine I immediately thought of one thing. Now going to have to fish the CD out for afternoon bike trainer time. Thanks for the memory.

Cool! For the full Jimi Hendrix Experience, you'll have to switch your crankset and rear wheel to the left side, and then set your bike on fire while you ride it! Good luck with that. Send us a video....or it didn't happen.
