I've done that. Old inner tube works just as well, is cheaper, and I tend to accumulate them...

This is the best choice for your consideration, I do believe!

I like the look and feel of leather, also low maintenance. The sweat stains add patina. I used red cloth tape on my '64 Legnano. I put in on in 2016, and after a couple of years it got pretty scruffy looking. I don't like the look or feel of shellac, so mine was uncoated. I unwrapped it , threw it in the washing machine, with a pre wash spot spray, bleach for colors, and regular laundry soap, inside a net lingerie bag to keep it from getting mixed up with everything else. After air drying, I re-wrapped it, and it looked a lot brighter. I just changed the rotted (AGAIN) repro Universal brake hoods, and plan to wrap this time with lightly padded Fiziq red vinyl. Not period correct, but I like the feel, and it is low maintenance.

Brooks leather wrap on the Raleigh, over thin cork tape.

Red uncoated cloth, 2 years on, before wash.

Red cloth after washing.
