Vintage TA Small Chain Ring: Metal Blocks

OK, I have a triple set of TA chainrings, and the smallest ring has these metal blocks bolted to them. I am guessing they are to prevent dropping the chain, but I am not sure.

Anyone know?

I took them off with a 0.05 inch Allen wrench (the smallest size I have). 1.5mm was too big.

Agree with @fietsbob; these are an end-user modification. I have several TA triples but none of them have blocks like that.
