Day 4 of 6. Delivering a 1980 Trek 414 from Youngstown Ohio to Athens Ohio. |
See you in WV!
|
Ha, I graduated high school (class of '79) in McDonald, Ohio, which is a 'burb of Youngstown. 😎
I know you're no dummy, but be careful around Youngstown. That's a large-ish city, that had a reputation of being dangerous, even before the steel mills closed down. After the economy died, it got worse, lol. 🤔😉 |

Gorgeous bike.
So let me get this straight... you're "delivering" the bike that you're riding? :foo: |

Ride on |
Saw a guy on the airport this morning checking in his home-made bike-in-a-box, reminded me of you.

Awesome! For some reason I thought you lived in Mexico. Are you an Ohio resident?

I made it to Athens, but broke a drive side rear spoke each of the last two days out. All of the outside ones had been damaged by a thrown chain, as we found out while replacing the first one. Today begins the search for a used replacement. I will attempt to take the Sunshine hub and Rígida rim home with me and rebuild it.
Correction: Three spokes in two days |
update: (isn't that odd? If I have bold turned on I cannot make a capital letter)
After much wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth, and discussions with active tourers on vintage bikes, I've decided to use the wheel as it is, while removing much/most of the extra weight from the back wheel. I now have a pair of front, lowrider panniers for that purpose. I plan to true the back wheel daily, if need be. I have eight extra spokes and a freewheel tool in stock. |
For whatever it's worth- 414 was the area code for Waterloo WI when that bike was made. :D
I hope you're having a good ride/trip back home! |
Seeds,
I'm thinking ahead while we still have time to SOTR next weekend. Is that rear wheel you are having problems with the one you will be using at SOTR? I don't think you should be taking on SOTR with a gimpy wheel. Do you need to borrow a wheel/wheelset for next weekend? Is your current rear wheel a 126 spaced freewheel hub with a 27" rim? What size tire? 1", 1 1/8 or 1 1/4"? |

I appreciate the offer, and I'll have to get back to you. I'm home alone, for the day, at my step-daughter's house, and am finding nothing in the way of a measuring device. It is a freewheel hub and 27"rim x 1 1/8. Spacing remains a mystery, though I'd be surprised if it's not 126. That said, the wider range seven speed freewheel I brought is too tight to function properly. It currently sports a 14-30 six speed.

Day 4 of 6. Delivering a 1980 Trek 414 from Youngstown Ohio to Athens Ohio. By the way Jerry- does that bike have the spectacularly deep Imron finish- where it looks like you can dip your finger "into" the paint? Whenever descriptions of Trek's blue bikes come up- and I've read of people saying the paint is "meh," I don't know if those people have actually seen the bikes in person- where that depth usually doesn't come across in photographs- it looks like it might be from the sparkle on the TT by the seat lug. I love seeing that paint in the morning sunshine! I remember the first day after getting my 84 Trek 420, taking pix in the back yard- and I was seriously giddy seeing how awesome that paint looked. My 620 and 400 Elance have a lot of the same depth- and seeing the sun sparkle on those really makes me smile. |
