Colnago Steel Bike Identification Guide

Hi everyone,

Whilst I was researching to buy a vintage Colnago frame last year, I discovered there was a heap of different models but I couldn't find a lot of information on the internet to help differentiate between the different models.
So, I decided to create my own guide. Crazy..I know that now!!

However, after investing a LOT of time trawling the internet and scruitinising a vast library of online Colnago catalogues, the guide has been completed.
It includes about 20 different STEEL bikes, dating from 1968 to late 1980's. Sorry, no titanium, alloy or carbon frames.
Thankfully some vintage bike resellers were happy to allow me to use of their beautiful images.

Hopefully someone will find this guide useful, after all the hours it took to create.

I know there are a lot of experts on this forum, so if you would like to suggest any alterations, please add comments to the appropriate page on my website. You don't need and account to post comments on my site.
Any other comments can be posted here..

How to identify a Colnago vintage bike ? Cycling Obsession

Thanks.

Nice but it's a shame to neglect anything after 1989. This thread has some good info:

Question is: why go past 1983?*

Because then you exclude something as wonderfully over the top garish as this:

I think 'how to identify a Colnago enthusiast' would have been far more interesting.

Jokes aside, it looks like an excellent resource - well done. I was wondering if there were catalog scans you could include in the model descriptions?

Do Colnagos have serial numbers? Are they useless like most Italian marques? Might be good to get a table of serial numbers relating to model and year.

At least in the 90s, there's a serial number on the rear drive side drop out. The first digit denotes the year, as in 9x, the second, a letter, supposedly the month, where A=January, etc.

That would have saved me a lot of time. They released a LOT of new bikes from 1983 on..

From what I can ascertain, the rear dropouts on all these old models have a serial number, but possibly excluding some export models, the number wasn't really recorded anywhere, so I don't think it is much help. Could be handy to record just in case your bike is stolen...

I was finding it pretty tiring to create a Colnago guide up to end of the 1980's. Maybe in my retirement I can continue adding all the extra models beyond that time frame.
