Help it broke! (Replacement Crank)
I am needing to replace the crank on my 1989 Trek 1100. Not sure what happened, I bought this at a steal at a garage sale, I should have checked the pedals better cause I suspect it's just been off track the whole time I have been riding. Either way, its stripped out and I have to now replace it before I can ride again.
The one that's on it now is a Sakae Edge and the other pieces have "santour Edge " on them.
I really have no clue what to buy. Do I replace the whole front gear crank, do I have to replace both? Can I just buy one from amazon for like 30 bucks or something @.@ everything on the trek website has me a bit scared.
I cant post pics cause I dont have enough posts yet @.@

That's a regular square-taper double crank that isn't low-profile in design, so a left arm from any same-length, standard-profile, price-point Japanese crankset would probably work.
In other words, it's a very common item to find, though not too many people go to the trouble of listing their orphaned individual crankarms for sale.
No doubt someone here has just the arm that you need, I'm sure that I do, and you shouldn't have to pay much more than $20 shipped for such an item.
You could also find such a part at any bike co-op that might be in a city near you. Boxes of them, for cheap.
Upgrading the whole crankset might also be inexpensive, though the front derailer would need to be readjusted following such replacement, and the right spindle length of the bottom bracket becomes a more-sensitive issue at that point. But if you are happy with your current gear ratios and your bottom bracket spindle bearings are still good then just a left arm is the simpler repair.

Typically can find a nice used crankset at a co op for much less than a Helicoil. While I love Suntour products, the Suntour Edge product line was a dog.

Well the pedal its self is fine. It's just the arm that seems to have been hollowed out and smoothed out.
Thank you, I will look around and see what I can find ^-^
