Chainring change

Is it possible to change my small chainring only on my Schwinn 974 equipped with dt shifters and Shimano 600.. As of now I have 53/42 chainring, I'm new to biking so was looking for something in the mid 30's for my small ring.. I would really want to keep everything else stock.. Any help would be great

I'm fairly certain the smallest you could go would be a 38.

Cassettes / Freewheels wear out, so you could replace it with a wider range in back. You'll need a longer chain at the same time.

And/Or replace the crankset with a compact having a 34 or 36. But keep your "600" on a shelf for future use.
