Great story, great bike! As the previous owner pointed out Jitensha Studio was and is in Berkeley, not Oakland. The meth-dealing Hell's Angel might have been in either the Oakland chapter (my guess), Richmond CA, (close by) or Frisco (that's what they call it!), but there's not a Berkeley chapter, AFAIK.

I’m sure the red comes from the head badge - which I hadn’t shared yet. From what I’ve been able to find, the Shula tag was put on just some select bikes from Jitensha and those are said to have been built by various shops in Japan.

Can someone ID the shifters? Never seen those before.

They look like Cyclo shifters for a pull chain derailleur. Japanese builders like Hirose and Toei have been known to make their own versions as well.
