Frame sleuthing - what is it?

Frame sleuth time. What is it?

Interesting. Could be a Toei. Can you wipe down the rear dropout and get a better picture of the markings?

Omgar, you must have missed the BB shell pic. Seems you know the builder. What a fine, fine example of beautiful, detailed frame building.

AngryFrankie 10-23-19 11:18 PM

So alexihnen, how did you come to have this fine frame in front of your camera?

Millstone 10-24-19 12:18 AM

... looks like a bike. A green one.

Did I win? :)

Right - it is a Toei. I honestly just skipped over it when I first snapped a few photos.

Well, a bit of a reveal...I bought it based on a few poor online photos, one of which showed a "Shula California-Tokyo" sticker head badge, so I rolled the dice.

Beautiful example of a classic Japanese made Toei frame in BRG (British Racing Green).

Well, that was one heck of a roll, can we assume the risk/reward helped facilitate your decision?

It wasn't an expensive bet. Now I just have to decide what to do with it.

Toei bikes are not very common in the US, and road racing bikes are a small percentage of their output. So you have a very special bike. Is it your size?

It's spot on - 57cm top tube. I believe that this one would have been a special order through Jitensha Studio in Berkeley. I'm trying to confirm as much.

The bike came with quite an eclectic mix of components:
Campy Nuovo Record RD
Campy Record FD
Shimano 600 headset
Campy seat post
Campy Record hubs / Mavic G40
Cinelli Criterium bars
Campy 50th Anniversary skewers

No overall photo of the whole frame? Boo!

I figured as much.

No brainer IMHO, get it rideable, make sure it fits and rides well or better for you then decide on how deep of a dive.

This is a Grail bike plain and simple, may not be your thing but I would allow a lot of latitude for this thinking about it.

Many here would be liquidating to make this happen and planning great things, If it were my size and I thought you were not going there I would be scrambling. ;)

I just got this from the previous owner and thought I'd share. Bikes like this have their own journey. I'm excited to be part of whatever's next for this one. :)

I hope you enjoy the bike it’s been with me for 25 years. I bought two bikes 1 Italian and the Shula. The Italian was all Campy and the Shula was Shimano 105. So I switched components and sold the Italian bike as it didn’t fit me. I lived in Berkeley at the time and visited the Shula bike shop often. The Shula that you bought was from a meth dealer to the Hells Angels and he got it on a “trade”. I’ve ridden and loved this bike for years and thought you’d like to know its history.

Seat cluster is gorgeous. Love those fastback stays.

Beautiful bike. I have to say the red tires and bar tape are heinously ugly to my eye.

It will work well as a “before” shot. Would enjoy hearing ideas and opinions on color & more. If I can date the frame I’ll go back to period gear.

himespau 10-26-19 05:49 AM

I think the red tape and wheels would work if the lugs were also outlined in red and the circles on the fork lug were filled in with the same color. That's a repaint/powder right? If it's original, forget I said anything.

TenGrainBread 10-26-19 07:13 AM

Obviously a very different kind of bike, but I think a honey color would work well.

Can someone ID the shifters? Never seen those before.

alexihnen 10-26-19 08:36 AM

The green does appear to be an old powder coat. Could be a reddish orange underneath. I like many of the light blue Toei bikes I see.
