Bikes: '73 Mondia Special, '73 Frejus TDF, '84 Gitane Rallye Tandem, '85 Trek (Custom) 660, 85/86 Gitane Professional, and a few more!

1980 Miyata 710

A recent find - my size. The pictures are of the bike as I found it, uncleaned, untouched. It appears to me that the prior owner took care of this bike and likely gave up on it because of the flaw that will follow this initial group of photo's. This should be a fun project and like any new n + 1 bike should be exciting. I'm open to any suggestions and comments.

Bikes: A bunch of old bikes and a few new ones

Replacement. I wouldn't ride it as is. It's hi tensile steel so inexpensive to replace or upgrade it with a chrome moly fork. The local bike co-op is also a good source for used forks if you're indifferent to color.

While the serial number may indicate that it was manufactured in 1980, this is actually a 1981 model. Miyata didn't introduce their CrMo butted tubeset until the 1981 model year and that seat tube decal was unique to the 1981 models. As for the fork, I'd use a generic replacement fork.

Bikes: Seriously downsizing.

My '81 710 started out like yours. New wheels, powdercoat, and a barnfull of parts got me here.

That looks like a real nice bike. Probably a new fork is in order. Pretty nice looking NOS chrome Tange forks are available on fleece bay for what seems to me to be reasonable prices.

I looked at your pic and thought "no, it's a 1984" (based on the graphics). Then I noticed it didn't have the braze-on shifter mount of a 1984 and some other frame anomalies. So, I re-read your post and noticed it was a re-paint.

Came to me as a frame and fork with a broken rear dropout. I built it up as a faux rando bike, and the '84 graphics were the only Miyata available at the time. Search 'born again Miyata' for all the sordid details.

You guys still around??

I'm passively shopping around for my next project. Any thoughts about this Miyata 710, not too far from me?? It's been listed for months -- down from $160 to $100.

[I'm using TinyURL to avoid the filters that confound me when I try to link to commercial websites]

Many thanks in advance!
[Obviously, others are welcome to chime in with any thoughts]

That would have been helpful (if I'd done it). Thanks!

For $100, I don't think that you could go wrong here.

Kinda' my thinking, too.

I'm already fuzzy about what year this bike is, but if I can make a play date, I can grab the S/N. As I understand it, Miyata is pretty reliable when it comes to decoding the S/N -- at least to the manufacture year. The main 'functional' difference it seems to make is the list of OEM-spec stuff -- what I'd like to compare the actual bike to. No worries. I'll take "good, and with great potential" over "all original" at this stage in MY C&V journey.

Email sent to seller.

Thanks!

Bikes: Miyata 610, Miyata 710, Cannondale SM500

Here’s mine, I think it’s an 82. I did a 650b conversion and commuted on it for years. Now I ride it for fun. It’s a great bike.

Bikes: A few but not too many. Some new, some old. High ratio of Frenchies. Metal only.
