What's the best option to replace these brake shoes or pads?

If possible, I'd like to keep the tire guides.

It looks like the currently installed shoes fit together with the tire guides.

I use Koolstop, either salmon or black pads. If you buy them with Shimano type pad holder they come with tire guides, which I don't find especially useful, or you can just buy pads and keep your holders and tire guides.

Here's an installed view. From your picture I couldn't see the pad shape and size, but the mounting screws are a pretty universal fit to most pad shapes.

Take apart the pad and tire guide assembly, and pull the rubber pad inserts out. Measure all dimensions with a digital caliper, and hope that one of the other oddball 80s brake pad replacements Koolstop sell will be reasonable fit. Maybe Modolo or something.

Personally I'd suggest you just buy the Kool Stop Dura pads linked to above, and install them. Put the old ones in a box. If you squint you will not be able to tell the difference.

Slightspeed Salamandrine Thanks for the info. I don't think I want to try to change the pad in these holders unless it's something that can be done well and without a lot of frustration. It's not clear if the Suntour Superbe offering will fit my Superbe Pro brake shoe.

Are Dura/Dura2 more likely to work best with Suntour Superbe Pro calipers compared with Kool Stop's Campi style offerings?

I'm pretty sure the Superbe Pro pads are different.

I've been putting Yokozuna sets from ebay on the bikes. Have them on four and they are just a really nice product

Good catch. I was able to sell these tires today and have ordered 1 size down (25c). I'm hoping they also are not too big.
The original Ritchey tires were 28c, these 28c Continentals were a touch (maybe 1 - 2 mm) too large.

They look a little different to me too.

They do look nice especially the finned Mathausers, some of the bodies look like Kool Stop. Does anyone know if they are the same shoes or pads?

It's not clear that these would fit my shoes.

I thought the SuperBee PRO holders were closed at both ends. I think I’d use the KoolStop Cross pads or even use some CampI holders.

Koolstop Superbe inserts are not going to work for what you’ve pictured. They do work perfect on these though!

Another vote for the modern, adjustable-angle pads. I run those on my own set of hidden-spring Superbe Pro calipers and they work well. As well as any single pivot can trying to haul down a 210 lb tall guy.

That looks like a good match, I might need those on a different bike. How difficult was it to remove the old and install the new pads in those shoes?

I agree, that seems like the best option. I ordered some Dura2 Road Holders as well as the finned Mathauser style, which look to be the same as what Yokuzuna offers.

I wonder if the manufacturer is the same? Kool Stop, Yokuzuna and Swissstop all seem similar.

It is a real bear but worth it. During the process, you will wish you got new modern pads with holders.

The Cross pads look nice, I went for Dura2 / KS-RHD2B for the weight savings :).

it took some work but not overly difficult. I believe I used a cold chisel to initially open the end and then finished doing so with pliers. I used a bench vise to squeeze it back together and I recall that part being very easy.
