Mavic 300 headset

Hi,

I need to remove a very old and tatty Mavic 300 Headset from a Colnago project, Looking on Ebay, the wrenches are going for about £50 a pair, I could really do without spending that on spanners I`ll never use again, so any help would be massively apprecieted.

Many thanks.

Mick.

You can also try using strap wrenches. Just make sure the headset is clean and not greasy so the rubber strap can grip the lock nut adequately.

Where are you located? Maybe someone nearby with a set could lend a hand? If you were in the San Francisco area I’d offer to do it for you but I’m guessing you’re in the UK since referenced £s. I like those headsets. Someone, possibly me, might be interested in buying it once you have it removed, but please be gentle with it. When I was a teenager I did resort to using a pair of vice grips on occasion but only with a shop rag in between to soften the teeth (last resort).

One way to get it off without marring would be to make a temporary tool or two with plastic wrap and epoxy putty.
