I grew up with English bikes and they always had, if I remember correctly, a stamped number on the frame just under the saddle. I now have a French bike with no number anywhere so which is the more common ?

Underside of the bottom bracket shell, and non-drive side dropout, are the most common locations. Other places I've seen them:
Drive side dropout
Bottom of the seat tube, just above the BB shell (I even found it on the drive side, partly obscured by the crank, on ONE bike)
Bottom of the downtube, just above the BB shell, underside
Bottom of the head tube, front side
