Dunelt Cable Replacement
Hi all. I just bought this 1963 Dunelt today to add to the collection. The cables on the bike are covered in the white rubber casings. I'd like to replace the cables. Does anyone know where or how I can replace the cables with the same style?
Thanks, Kevin https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...f15afc2ad9.jpg |
The ribbed rubber housing on these bikes is generally not available. Salvaging them from co-ops and older garage sale bikes is the best way to keep it all original. I might add that I've kept a number of these housings but they look their age and are prone to failure, probably like yours.

Yeah, that's what I thought. The cables still work so I'm going to try and clean them up.
Thanks for the reply. |
+1 on using the old housings. I try to save them whenever I can.

Thanks!

I also can’t tell if your brakes secure the cables by nut and bolt or if they’re the older kind with steel hooks of a sort. Close up pick of the brake would help.

Thanks for the pics! Good thing in that those are standard cable anchors so you can use a new inner wire. Unless the inner wires are rusted in place, I’ve actually reused that white ribbed housing. Cleans up very well with a magic eraser or some such and just be sure to grease up the inner wire when you reinstall. If you want to replace the housing, it’s often on eBay, new old stock.

Thanks, the cables are all moving inside but I'm sure a little grease will certainly help. I think they'll clean up nice. This is my fourth or fifth 3 speed rebuild and this one is cooperating the best. The bike has the usual 57 years of grime on it but it looks like it wasn't ridden much. It's lacking any nicks or scrapes and the 3 speed hub is rusty but moves freely. I did repack the bottom bracket bearings as they were pretty dirty.
Thanks again for the help. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e9a2d6124c.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a85121afd1.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...bdf8a954bc.jpg |

The bike looks great! Are those the Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tyres. I thought that they had writing on the sidewall.

No Kenda 26 x 1 3/8. I couldn't get the Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tyres so I went with the next best. I do like the Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tyres better, though.
