Hey all. I have a ( I believe) 1984 Mt. Tam. It has a mix of original parts and those that didn't seem original or were too destroyed were swapped out to something else. Serial number is 20T4. So 20", Mt. Tam, 1984? It is a dark green. Seat post cluster is flat on top. The bike has traditional cantilever brakes. No downtube decals but it still has faint headtube and seattube Fisher decals. Can't post a pic due to post count.

The 4 would refer to the frame sequence number. So the fourth 20" Mt. Tam.

get your post count up and send pics, that would be a pretty early Mt. Tam (as noted above, the 4 represents the fourth 20 inch Mt. Tam built). interestingly my Fisher flyer lists a 19.75 inch Mt Tam with serial number “004” (not the familiar sequence) that was used and unpainted for $125 back in fall of 1985.

Ah! Right. I forgot about that. You are correct. For some reason 4 meant 1984 in my head.

I'll work on that! Cool you could buy unpainted! Would the 19.75" frames have a stamping that said 19.75 or just 1975?

As per the flyer for Fisher’s Indian Summer clearance sale, the serial number for that particular frame was just “004” while other available frames and complete bikes are listed by the typical sequence of size-model-sequential number including my own “18C8” (also a pretty early number). 004 was used and unpainted and would assume a bit rough given price of only $125. For comparison, new Mt Tam frames were priced between $384 and $489 (down from $609).

Interesting! Thanks. Cool yours is a 8! That is early
Question on the spec for 1984, I see the flyer near the top of the thread has what looks like add on/upgrade parts, but what was the standard spec for components? When I built mine up, I kept the old XT rear deraileur, post deer head, a deer head FD and I put on a Deore FC-DE30 crankset. Was any of this close? Or should it have had all deerhead and a TA crankset?

What has already been provided is all that has surfaced so I would look at the 1985 specs I posted as a general guideline for an early Mt Tam build up like yours. By 1984/1985 first gen Shimano Deore XT cranks and derailleurs were pretty common, so that is what I would use … if I had something a wee bit earlier I might be tempted to go with a TA crankset.

Cool, I am going to start looking for the right rear derailleur and crank. It's fun to have period/factory correct parts.

Please get some pix posted with close ups of serial number, seat stay/seat post cluster, bottom bracket/seat tube/down tube junction, and head tube…plus the former decal areas.

As far as parts, again use list as guide but since Mt Tam framesets were available, focus on period correct and use what tickles your fancy. When I built my Comp up in period, I used Phil Wood hubs, a Suntour Light Action rear derailleur, and an American Classic seat post because that is what I wanted at the time.

Scott B. In 1985, the Japanese-built Fisher competition bikes were named “Excaliburs” and are labeled as such on the top tube (not my photo).

The Excalibur was a mid-year introduction and was replaced a year later by the ProCaliber. If your bike is labeled as a “ProCaliber” it would have to be later than 1985…photos of seat stay attachments at seat tube would help.
Also note that the Excaliburs had Bullmoose bars…so photo of your stem would be good as Fisher recalled the aluminum Bullmoose bars, replacing them with the Rhino stem.

Scott B as per that post, the pictured bike is a 1985 Mt Tam which was the American-made touring model offered by Fisher Mountain Bikes (the Montare being the Japanese-made touring version). Your “ProCaliber” was the race model, and being Japanese-made should have a welded frame instead of the filet brazed joints seen on the Mt Tam and Comp models. The Japanese-made bikes allowed Fisher to offer bikes at a lower price point than his American-built models. I think it was a great scheme as the company was quite young at the time.

Keep posting so that you can send pix, the serial numbers for the imports are mumbo jumbo to me but I can likely pin things down a bit with pix.

I got this bike as a gift in late 1985. a birthday gift that was late somewhere around dec 15 1985 I think. I don't know what was paid for it but I do have some papers
somewhere that came with it. I will look around to see if I can them. but it is all stock except the seat I think I broke it doing the much unwanted face plant..

ScottB … quick question, is frame labeled as a ProCaliber or Excalibur (as with a frame decal)? If labeled as a ProCaliber it would be a 1986 as they were only available in chrome yellow in 1986 (chrome yellow was also available on the 1985 Excaliburs). Chrome yellow was not offered on the 1987 ProCalibers (tri-color only). While the colors available on the US-built models seems to vary from what is stated in catalogs, the imports seem to adhere pretty strictly to what is stated.

The aluminum versions were marked as such while the steel versions were not. The Montares of 1985 and 1986 all had painted welded steel bullmoose bars with quill stem while the Excalibur/ProCaliber had aluminum on 18 and 19 inch frames and painted welded steel on larger frames and these were clamp on using a stub to mount the bars. Choice of bars on the Comp and Mt Tam was up to buyer with no frame size restrictions (maybe thats why the aluminum versions were recalled, too many folks on bigger bikes specing aluminum with catastrophic results). If you chose steel for your Comp or Mt Tam they were fillet brazed and painted frame color…though I recall I had choice of contrasting yellow when I bought my Comp…I chose the aluminum).-

I am a bit of a newbie. I am not sure what you mean when you say "You can download pictures to your album and someone could post them for you."
I am still trying to figure out how to list multiple bikes on my profile. every time I add a bike to my profile it removes the bike I had on there.
let me do some reading on the help page
