Bertin, brought in by Patrick Sercu during the Tokyo Olympics of 1964.

Pre 1993ish Basso logo with stripes (headtube). Must be Marino in 1972 — not makers' stripes of course, these are of the "my brother was a world champ" kind.

BTW, previous owner of this frame really liked his Olympic rings as well:

Alan uses the worldchampion-striping correctly, even with the years on it. But not consistent as you see.

And the stickers they used a while are another thing.

Likely true. Vittorio Adorni rode a re-branded Masi. Vittorio Marcelli won the '68 Amateur's WC (if that counts), and it's possible he rode a Masi. Keetie van Oosten-Hage, (NINE-time Word Champion - take that Sagan!) probably didn't, as she rode RIH bikes.

And then there's track, with an Italian winner in '68, Giuseppe Beghetto.

Making my way through my bike galleries and grabbing a shot of each I find.

Most "interesting" set are the upside down ones on this Lemond. This bike is one of a handful Greg had custom done himself to give to friends.

That seems logical, certainly if she rode a Belgian bike. I can't make out the brand from the pictures I've found so far, though:

Yep. IIRC, the Belgian and Dutch builders were early adopters of Japanese tubing in their top race bikes, Flandria in particular.

So... Greg Lemond put the rainbow stripes on his bikes because he won the World Championships. But he was not riding a "Greg Lemond" bike...

Same for Francesco Moser, and others I am sure....

So if you win a WC, and then start a bike brand, you get use of the rainbow stripes.

Actually in 1989 he was on a Greg Lemond decaled bike. Made my TVT but certainly a Lemond bike. :p

Painted fade stripes on a Limongi from about 1990. some of his frames have valid stickers with the UCI stripes.

I thought he was on a Bottechia because that is what he rode at the same year's Tour... :foo:

Some high profile riders had contracts that permitted them to ride their eponymous brand in certain races. Generally, one of these was the World Championships because it was contested by national teams and not trade teams. In other words, since Lemond wasn't riding for ADR-Bottecchia at the World Championships but Team USA, it wasn't as important to have him on a Bottecchia. However, since Lemond was contracted to ADR-Bottecchia that year, Bottecchia still got to use the 1989 Campione del Mondo palmares decal on their bicycles. Clear as mud?

Often, riders with eponymous brands also had contract clauses allowing them to ride their own brands at events on their native soil. For instance, I have several photos of Steve Bauer riding his own brand of bicycle at Canadian events, while he was under contract to la Vie Claire.

Late to the party and TL:DR, but has anyone else noticed/mentioned that all the sequences mentioned here are, by even the most extreme stretch of the imagination, NOT "rainbow" stripes?

(Just sayin'.....)

Correct, we're talkin' about UCI-rainbow colors.
