I like the feel of cloth tape coated with shellac on bare hands. My formula: eight or nine THIN coats of "clear" (none of it is actually clear, it will tint toward the warm side no matter what.) When done, it looks slick but I find it has plenty of grip all the same.

I used cloth tape and shellac on my Rabeneick Campagnolo for period looks, cant say I care too much for the plasticky feel on the spindly bars though.

I still like to use shellaced twine to end modern style tape:
