Band clamp compatibility
Hi everyone - I am looking to replace an endless clamp for a Suntour Superbe Pro FD. So far no luck with Suntour clamps but I have seen Shimano FDs with a band clamp. Will they work? I suspect from the design there are likely compatibility issues. Could the Shimano band do the job? Does anyone have any suggestions for a home-made clamp if Shimano doesn't work?

Any chance you might include a photo of what you mean? I think I get it but a visual would help.

My sister moved to Thunder Bay for work and I am due to visit my college roommate who is from that little Island across the Northumberland Strait. I always travel with 2 or three bicycles.

[QUOTE=oneclick;21898239]I went out to the shed for pics and found I didn't silver-solder a nut, it was a screw; the nut goes on the outside:
Makes sense and looks alright. I ordered the Shimano and I am going to try to modify it and use it until I find a Suntour. My father was a machinist and my brother is a welder so they should probably be able to help me out. I am a teacher so I have a tough enough time just adjusting derailleurs.

I have a Shimano Deore XT, FD M730 that has a band that looks MUCH closer to the Cyclone FD in that ebay ad, but not so close that I would bet it's sure to swap in, but much better bet than the "10-speed STI lever band" in the first post! Downside also is this XT FD is for a 31.8mm seat tube, but you might have more luck hunting for XT FDs that MAY have been made for the tube OD you need.

I found a Suntour band with symmetrical dt shifters on eBay (paid too much ... oh well). Still want another if anyone comes across one.

Dannyboy21 Just curious: Is your SunTour front derailleur missing the "endless band" entirely or are is the special screw just cammed out so badly that it is not usable?

I'm a little concerned that you're going to run into issues with both the Shimano and the Symmetric band.
The Shimano is for drop bar brake levers, and so the diameter will be ~23mm, while the derailleur clamp would be 28.6. Maybe just a little futzing will make it work.
The Symmetric, meanwhile, might give you a mismatch on thread pitch for the mounting bolt. It is kind of a unicorn thread pitch (can't recall off the top of my head) for the Symmetric model that goes straight into a brazed-on boss, and I suspect the clamp model has the same bolt. It may or may not match the mounting bits for the Superbe FD, so just be careful when you're initially threading it in. If it's a no-go, your best bet is to look for the Cyclone FD variants, as cudak888 mentioned above. I have two bikes with Symmetrics (one with the boss, one clamp), but I don't recall the internals of the clampy bits.
