Running brake cables

What’s the preferred method of running the front non aero brake cable when the caliper cinch bolt is on the same side?

Bikes: 1959 Capo Modell Campagnolo; 1960 Capo Sieger (2); 1962 Carlton Franco Suisse; 1970 Peugeot UO-8; 1982 Bianchi Campione d'Italia; 1988 Schwinn Project KOM-10;

The traditional method is simply to form a U-shaped cable loop without crossing over the handlebar stem. That's what I always did. My first Bianchi came with Universal sidepulls and left rear / right front braking, and the Schwinns of that era came with Weinmann sidepulls and left front / right rear braking. These were just mirror images of each other, with no centerline crossing for either brake cable.
