Free Spirit Bikes

We had a1982 Free Spirit Tourney 920se come into the shop for a minor repair, and I fell in love on my test ride. I did some research and couldn’t really find much. Does anyone here have an opinion on them? My coworker called it an “OG Walmart bike” because they were a Sears exclusive, but it felt a lot better made than a Walmart bike.

The older department store bikes were better made than the ones they sell today. Free Spirit bikes have strong frames and forks but came with cheap components.
The best cheap bike sold by Sears was the Spaulding bikes...

Bikes: Lots of English 3-speeds, a couple of old road bikes, 3 mountain bikes, 1 hybrid, and a couple of mash-ups

Sears Free Spirit bikes ranged from models welded out of thick heavy tubing to models brazed from Reynolds 531 double butted tubing. That means there is no easy answer. I am not familiar with that model. Could you post photos and details of the components?
