Bikes: Road ready: 1993 Koga Miyata City Liner Touring Hybrid, 1989 Centurion Sport DLX, "I Blame GP" Bridgestone CB-1. Projects: Yea, I got a problem....

I saw a immaculate Raleigh ride by in my neighborhood this morning. I'll guess 80's vintage. It had Aluminum rims, polished metal fenders and a derailleur. Most people around here assume I'm harmless, but I didn't chase down the vintage lady to ask her about her bike. Aluminum rims and brakes that work are kind of a necessity for me. I would like to have a nice 3 speed at some point, but there will be a wheel build involved.

Despite all the input I've received, this is kinda what I thought the "target" might be for a beach runabout. Still shopping...

They're not a bad choice for North Road conversions, as they still maintain a fairly long top tube, unlike many hybrids that came later on (especially when aluminum frames became popular).

That is why converting a road frame to north road handlebars won't always go well.
A workaround is a Brooks sprung saddle, zero setback post and short stem/swept back bars cockpit.. Different position with a weight shift over the pedals.
Or do a vintage gravel drop bar position which can be great too. Different purposes. The 91 crossroads has a 57 cm top tube.

Where in MD are you located? I'm in NC, but my wife's family is in the DC suburbs and I often end up getting bikes there. You're totally right that the 3-speed supply is low on Craigslist right now (compared to the last time I was looking for bikes in the DC area, about three months ago). But I just had some fun looking. Here's a bunch of bikes that look like good beach-house material to me (as usual, better deals in Baltimore than DC):
