Here's a few parts that I have if they end up working out for this build.
These are 27" Mavic rims on early Dura Ace hubs.
If thumb shifters win out, these are them.
If I can make it work, these will go on. I need to source a seatpost cinch bolt mounted cable stop/pulley for the rear...

Thanks for pointing that out, non-fixie. Yeah, in the past she wasn't into bikes, period. A couple years back I set her up with the Diamondback mtb so she could ride to Community College.
Only recently she expressed interest in a 'nicer bike, after seeing the bike that I built for her little brother(picture below).

I built up a Lotus mixte from that era for similar purpose for one of my kids. A bit hard to see, but I think this frame also has the option to install the rear calipers on the “mixte” frame tubes rather than the seat stays. That’s what I did on the Lotus and it is a much simpler and more effective location for the rear brake.
Also, that Lotus now sports the cheap Sunlite version of the North Road bar, know as the Elson Roadster, as do both of my bikes.

The route is flat. The frame has a semi-horizontal dropout. Ideal candidate for single speed. Something like a 42/17 or 40/16 or maybe slightly lower ratio. Somewhere around 65 to 68 gear inches, maybe? Simple, light, reliable, fun, and adequate for a flat route.

I used the same frame for a build for my ex girlfriend. These are great frames for this type of build. I set her's up with nitto MTB bars, and suntour XC shifters and stock mechs. Stock wheelset and brakes as well. Brakes the weak point, but with new pads and adjustments they worked well. Here's a bad pic of the setup:

I've told my wife that if this doesn't sell this season, I'm putting a Wald 8095 handlebar on it and making her try riding it. It's a bit small, but being a mixtie she *could* ride it. The Boardwalk was the bottom of the barrel hybrid that year, but even the entry level parts are work great. It's just really heavy...

Can't tell from the pics, but if the bridge on the laterals is also drilled for a brake, then you can go the super-classical route: using an extra-long straddle cable you could mount these Universals down there (as older mixtes did) and run the straddle around the seat tube.

Might something like this Tektro fork hanger work? Mount it to the underside of the lateral bridge and mount the brake caliper underside of the brake bridge. Both clean looking and "out of the way". Just a thought....

The single speed and three speed ideas have crossed my mind. I haven't built a bike with either...

Since starting on this project, I have discovered quite a few pieces that I forgot I even had. I'd really like to use these parts on the Bridgestone..
However, my daughter wouldn't appreciate it any more, and these would likely get trashed at some point.

The dog's ears seem to indicate a preference for a more inverted W-shaped porteur, a la post # 3.
The existing mechs and crank will serve her fine on that bike. I would definitely reserve the Dura Ace bits for something more appropriate. I just noticed that last crank arm is square taper, but not set diagonal to the arm (I'm sure there's a "correct" term for this).
I would move the shifters outboard a bit, closer to the brake lever bands. This would be a good time to have her test-sit the bike, see how her fingers reach the brake levers, how her thumbs reach the shifters, etc. She might need (or at least appreciate) brake levers with less reach.

I got a package yesterday, that had the tires and tubes.

I have finished version 1.0.
I changed a couple of things from where it was going in previous posts. I ended using some early Dura Ace brake calipers. The Universal centerpull with front rack were originally planned, but I didn't have the hardware to make it work, anddd my kid would have most probably destroyed the rack when loading/unloading the bike from her hatchback.
I replaced the lower end Suntour derailleurs with Cyclone parts. Note that most of these parts show wear and slight damage. My daughter is not easy on stuff, so this is not going to be a showpiece. I'm excited to see here use it tomorrow on her commute to work.
I'm not sure how she'll adapt to these particular handlebars. I might switch out the shifters to barcons, or change to mtb riser bars. Who knows. Ill get a report after a week or so. Also,, a rack nay be in order, but she's content using a messenger bag at the moment.
Anyhow, here's the parts list followed by some pictures.

If I were going to get a bike for my children/grandchildren, I would want them to have the benefits of modern safety features, such as disc brakes. I worry about them enough as it is without giving them the equivalent of an automobile with no air bags. FYI I am in no way suggesting that you wanting in any way as a parent. I'm merely stating what I would do.
