The washer has two criteria. The opening must fit the shape of the axle and then there needs to be a raised flange to grab the dropouts to prevent rotation. There were a few versions of these and you really should have them. It may work without them, for awhile.

For the older AW hub, (I'm making an assumption that that is the hub you have or at least the same axle) the serrated washers are as follows:
HMW155 that fits a classic three speed frame, 7.9mm drop out slot
HMW494 that fits a frame made for derailleur gears, 9.5mm drop out slot
Harris Cyclery, Aaron's Bike Bike Repair (aka Rat City Bike) and Modern bike have a good supply of Sturmey Archer parts. Also SJS Cycles has plenty of parts.
By the way, we are making the assumption that the serrated washer that you are missing is the one with the tabs to prevent the hub from rotating.
