Mavic starfish crank.

Here's a pic from the web (Edit: not allowed)

So somebody that owns one needs to post it. :)

I don't agree, but the Mavic "starfish" crank deserves to be known by everyone, for better or for worse....

That whole Mavic group was novel and interesting. Maybe too much of a departure from the era of Campagolo Record for some, perhaps?
In some ways, I suppose this crank could be the first step towards the aesthetic of modern Shimano cranks, and for that, it may earn some enmity of the C&V crowd.

Love vintage Suntour stuff, but to me, its a tie between Suntour Blaze and Edge cranksets.

it’s like an uglier, cheaper, version of the mavic.

I really don't like the looks of this stem. It works because I don't have another at the same length to replace it.

I used to have a stem like the one SJX426 shared that came with a LeMond. I was going to use it as my entry in this competition, but I seem to have given it to a local non-profit shop. I'm not sure what I was thinking. I actually like that shop.

I'd have to poke around the garage to prove it, but I think I still have this one, and depending on the answer to my question below this may have to be my entry.

SquireBlack, can you rule on whether home-brewed conglomerations are eligible for this contest? If so, I think I've got the winner right here.

That was a desperate attempt to get a handlebar bag to sit below the bars, though depending on your tastes the handlebar bag before my hack may seem even uglier.

Worth Repeating:

Since it's my competition, I get to make the rules:
 1. You have to be the owner of the completion-entry component: no submission of random photos found on the web
 2. Post your photos in this thread; component can be on or off a bike
 3. Competition is open for entries until Halloween (31st October)
 4. The winner will be decided by acclimation, or, if there is controversy, by voting; all those submitting entries may vote.
 5. The prize will be my ugly stem shown above, or any uglier component that a member may wish to donate. (Winner pays postage.)

the ultimate example of this trend might be the Infinity seats...

As far as just sitting on the rails... I'd swear that I'd seen a show bike at NAHBS that had a saddle with two parallel rails for the rider to sit on (in theory). I think it might have been a Cherubim bike, but haven't found an image of it. Maybe someone else has seen it too?

I second the Mavic Starfish crank.

Leave the starfish in the ocean and get something with more style/beauty

This thread might motivate me to take pics of components that I've hidden away deep in the recesses of the bike cave.

jdawginsc 10-06-21 01:19 PM

My entries...

First up..the component specifically designed to induce the owner to pay to upgrade. It screams "Purposely designed to disgust" Yuck...
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d0d4c641a.jpeg
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...88576abaa.jpeg

Entry 2: "Well, we don't want to fully redesign the seatpost idea...let's stop halfway there..."
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...1e2f104d1.jpeg

Love and Life. If you love your life, do not ride this. Extra touch is the plastic piece on the front that easily breaks...
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d6397a746.jpeg

And the piece de la resistance...The bent winkie shifter...these are available for purchase by the way. Not sure whether it was anatomically a joke, or aerodynamic in some way that far exceeds our current level of understanding...

USAZorro 10-06-21 01:24 PM

I have an entry. I have no proof at all, but I suspect there's a design connection between these sleek beauties, and the ever-popular "box with wheels" aesthetic that Volvo embraced during much of the late 70's and well into the 80's.

Go for a ride and get a prostate exam into the bargain. What a great idea . . . .

Wow, that's pretty bad! Not sure if this or the valentino derailluer posted above would be the ugliest campy part.

Hard to capture the true ugliness of this monster. It shifted fine on my Atlantis but it just could not stay. Replaced by a much prettier Cyclone, which also weighs 62 grams less.
