Well, I was cleaning this front wheel and surprise!!
It is a cracked there.
The wheel is not usable anymore, isn't it?

Yup - scrap yard fodder. Sad to discover things like this and it has happened to me more than once, or twice or three...

hubs are similar to bench vises and electric heating elements in that they carry with them the means of their own destruction
if the drive side cone is not cinched tightly against the locknut the rotation of the wheel can tighten the cone until it fractures the hub

Bikes: It's complicated.
I think I'm going to go inspect my fleet this morning...

I didn't take it apart to see but it feels like the ratchet and the free hub are still functional. I didn't feel the need for an autopsy though since dead is dead! It is just for display on my wall of fame.

That reminds me of the Shimano front hub high flange I cracked at the spoke circle. I rode the short distance home very slowly and gingerly and moved the spokes, rim, axle, and bearings to a different hub shell. Kinda scary, even though no harm done in my case.

I suppose, rebuild if one wishes to match the other wheel, otherwise replace.

missing a metalurgical examination under a high-power microscope, I’d assume a misfit between the diameter of the hardened bearing cup, and the diameter of the bearing seat cut into the hub body. The cup being too big for the hole, and the strain eventually cracking the hub shell. To some undetermined amount helped on by riding stresses.
