Peugeot ID

Hi - bought this peugeot a few years back from someone whose father had recently passed away. His father had bought it new. Trying to find out what year and model and how original. The cranks look like replacements? Any help appreciated.

Apologies - I'm a new poster so the pictures can be found here - photos.app.goo.gl/aMNPDzEx51Jn4GYG6

hello shop and welcome to the forum!

good job with the photos

cycle appears to be model A08 from the mid-1970's

the wheel rim is marked with a date of 1975

you may also find a date marking on the backside of the machine's Simplex Prestige model 637 rear derailleur

in addition to the chainset the bicycle's pedals and front gear mech have also been changed

Bikes: 1959 Capo Modell Campagnolo; 1960 Capo Sieger (2); 1962 Carlton Franco Suisse; 1970 Peugeot UO-8; 1982 Bianchi Campione d'Italia; 1988 Schwinn Project KOM-10;

1970s AO8, for sure.
Leading "1" in the serial number would presumably indicate 1971, if Peugeot had been consistent in serial numbering. (At least it is 7 digits long, consistent with 1970s decade.) However, the decals look like ca. 1975, which is consistent with the dating on the rims, mentioned earlier in this thread. Wheels are very likely original, with nuts replacing the original easily damaged (or stolen -- been there ... done that) wingnuts. Are the cranks mismatched? I am not sure when Peugeot switched from cottered steel to aluminum cranks on the lower-level road bikes.

Because the bike does not have chrome fork socks, I would suggest that it is a UO6, not a UO8. This is a UO8 that I found at the dump many years ago. It now lives in Australia...

The rims are dated 1975 which would also align with the plastic headbadge. I would say 1975/6 AO8 ; and yes the crank is a replacement.

edit: This is a picture from the 1977 catalog (hosted on bikeboompeugeot.com) which is extremely close so could be as late as 1977, but I would say earlier due to the downtube shifters and plastic rear derailleur.

Based on a recent analysis by forum member Hummer, the RY B5 stamped into the shell indicates that the frame originated from Peugeot's Romilly Sur Seine facility during February 1975. That certianly fits well with the rim's date code, other characteristics of the bicycle and would make it a 1975 Peugeot A08, provided the Australian market used the same model designations as the USA.

That Peugeot I pictured is "as found" at the dump, believe it or not. "As found" it did not have a saddle. The next day, however, at the dump I found another Peugeot with the saddle pictured, making the bike complete and original. I sold it to a fellow in Australia many years ago. My FedEx cost to ship was north of $900 CND. He asked if he could use his own FedEx account which got the cost down to about $600 US. Then, to add insult to injury, Australia customs quarantined the bike and insisted that it be professionally cleaned. I rarely ship to Australia anymore but will as long as the buyer is aware of potential problems. Such as...

Canada Post wanted over $50 to ship this Bianchi fork to Australia. They promised, or at least suggested, that it would be delivered with-in 90 days (three months). The buyer cancelled his purchase. I can understand why...

Hello shop,

welcome to the forum.

There is a date code on the bottom bracket, RY B5.

The RY = Romilly factory in France,
B = month 2 or February,
5 = 1975 the year of frame manufacture.

Welcome aboard shop you’ve met some of our learned elders and gotten the benefit of the forum’s vast knowledge😉.

Nice Pug you inherited there, stick around and post up any restoration, or rides you get in.
