Need Peugeot help please

I just received this Peugeot frame in the mail today. It says Professional 700 on the top tube and PF700 on the serial number decal so I guess that is what it is. But I have not found anything on the innerweb referencing this bike. It has a "Columbus SLX" decal on the downtube. I looked into the BB shell at the bottom of the downtube and there is "spiraling" in there. The frame weighs 1930 grams on my scale and is a 58cm frame. The dropouts seem to be unmarked. Can anyone tell me what I have, what year (ish) and what it may have been original equipped with. My guess is a Euro market only frame but that's only a guess.

Thanks guys

Y4C54160 - Ha... Its another "What the hell have I got?" Peugeot thread. I feel for ya buddy. I more or less gave up on trying to date Peugeot's by thier numbers on older bikes but this one looks modern enough to actually have a useful serial number...

Anybody???

Some info fro that time period on Peugeots. They did make SLX which is obvious and they did place the Columbus sticker on the downtube

people send you unsolicited frames in the mail for no reason? How do I get on that list?

Based on the serial number it should be a 1994 model. The"C" is likely an incomplete zero. There was nothing like this in Canada or the USA at the time, so likely some European market model.

1990-92 Peugeot Frame

@cdaniels et al,

For starters please read my post from 2011. It will save me retyping info I've posted many times before.... :innocent:

It's dated but still mostly correct. https://www.bikeforums.net/12466037-post17.html

My educated guess is that the frame is a 1990-92 model made for one of the European markets: France, The UK, The Netherlands, Germany or even the East Block??? :foo:

Here's why - In 1989 Peugeot moved the brake cable guides under they top tube, they changed to vertical dropouts and they started using cast rear brake bridges on their top performance models.

My UK model 1989 Chorus 753:

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...fa662c38da.jpg

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...cda5e735eb.jpg

Fade paint jobs weren't universal,,, In some markets the same models came in solid colors but by 1992-3 the fade paint appears to have been dropped. Also about 1990-91 Peugeot started using lugs with "windows".

Here's an even more gaudy 1991-2 PF1000E Professional frame in someone's team colors, maybe the Festina squad:

PF1000 - one model up from the OP's PF800 frame??? (note: I bid on this frame on eBay but some fool wanted it more than me)

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b6915338ca.jpg

FYI, Peugeot used Reynolds 708 tubing for a few years starting around 1992. It had internal ribs in the main tubes like Columbus TSX. They used SLX on a lot of European models after 1998.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6be5134f79.jpg
Getting back to the OP's PF800 frame, Peugeot used the same frame geometry on all of their top end performance models from the late 80's into the early 90's. Only the tubing, components and paint changed.

From the 1988 US catalog.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2110ac4ca8.jpg

I have a 1988 Biarritz (Super Vitus 980), a 1988 and a 1989 Chorus (Reynolds 753) plus I briefly had a UK model 1989 SLX (Columbus SLX). The handling on those bikes is superb and the ride except for the SLX is amazingly smooth. The SLX because of the reinforced seat tube, down tube and chain stays was a little too "brisk" for my elderly tastes.

My 88 Biarritz is one of my 2 all time favorite riding and handling Goldilocks bikes. In fact it's a little smoother riding than the Chorus bikes with Reynolds 753 frames.

Put it together and ride it, you wont be sorry!

the blue and yellow one is impressive!! wish to have one...

El Chaba 01-26-22 07:42 AM

I am going to estimate slightly earlier than some of the other estimates at1990 plus or minus a year or two. I know they were available as bare frame sets here in the US as a teammate had one. His was a solid cor the same as the deep purple on this frame. He liked it a lot.

cdaniels 01-26-22 06:48 PM

Thank you all that replied, I appreciate the information.

B.T.W. it did come directly from France

Chombi1 01-26-22 08:05 PM

Peugeot just seemed to have lost their way with the graphics and colors on these 90's bikes.......
It went downhill after they changed over to their rainbow band graphics in 1984......

gregkeble 08-26-22 08:10 AM

I have this exact bike which I bought new from Evans Cycles in London, UK in 1996. It came with and still has fitted Shimano 600 STI drivetrain with 105 brakes. it came with Mavic wheels but I replaced them years ago.

A bit late, but here’s one from 1994 French catalog:

The graphics and paint schemes on the Peugeots definitely took a nose dive post 1982.......

I know that this thread is more than a year old.

The frame number is clearly Y4C54160.

As T-Mar has stated, the frame serial number is a frame manufactured in 1994. Not a mystery and not before 1994.

This is after 1992 when Cycleurope is formed and the Peugeot Cycles brand is licensed to them.

The barcode label: The 9th and 10th characters are "FR" indicating the French market.

As shown earlier, this model appears in the French 1994 Peugeot Cycles catalogue.
