Fork and stem

Well fork is assembled after weeks of waiting for favours from a couple buds to help get it done. Both came out real nice and once decals get applied i will mount them up.

Fork nearing completion

Well I’ve never worked with water slides before and I was a little apprehensive but love em. They went on easily and i was able to position them exactly as I wanted them.

Progress

Well progress is slow over the summer but things are happening. I’m awaiting a new BB-UN72 68x122 to arrive so I can fir the Ritchey crankset. The fork is cured and mounted. Now patiently searching for Ritchey cantilever brakes and levers. I’ve put the specialized cranks on it to get a feel for what the bike will be like and I can already tell how special it will be.

New bottom bracket on and fits perfectly with the Logic crankset. Pedals on and seat height adjusted. The Sachs chain that came with is too short the the new chainrings so I installed a Hyperglide one I had in the spare parts bin. Went for a short cruise up and down the block. Single speed and no brakes for the win lol. Nice to have a rolling unit. Brake levers on the way. Cantilever brakes and thimb shifter not yet sourced

The brake levers offered a bit of comfort lol. Had to really pay attention to what was coming up ahead of me🤓 single speed was very sufficient for the ride. It was very leisurely

Looooooved those Mavic 231 rims from the early 90s - absolutely bomb proof. Rode a couple pairs on non suspension mountain bikes for 25+ years beating the crap outta 'em w/ 0 issues.

Lotta nice upgrades by previous owner however, IMO, to truly do the drivetrain justice I'd put Suntour XC Pro on it. Hands down best MTB drive train (shifters are sooo good) from the late 80s-mid 90s or so.

The mavic 231 were indeed outstanding quality rims but the 217 which came later was a step above them. The 231 is still a a very durable and bullet proof rim much more than the x221 or x238

New saddle on the way, should be a nice fit and a bit of an upgrade from catalog.

Great restoration project, very impressive. What’s the story on that stem, maybe I missed it? Custom? Did you braze it?

I just finished an ‘89 mtb project and this thread is motivation to do a better job documenting the process. Thanks!

I know you're sticking w/ the Ritchey Logic theme but from a purely functional level (like, say, you're going to ride trails on this hog..) I'd put Shimano XT/XTR v-breaks on there all day and all night.

Ya I get that, truth is at north of 50 years old this bike won’t need higher end brakes to stop me. It is a close to catalog spec build that I’m focussed on achieving with this restoration.

Perfect sit rep, exactly what it is.

Pretty much my go to ethos at all times.
