Superbe Rear Derailleur cog limit
Velobase says the later models do 23T for friction and 26 for index. Why can indexing do 3 more cogs?

Because someone made an error? It actually states the opposite, for Sprint and from what I understand, Superbe and Sprint were identical. I'm running Sprint 9000 indexed with a 26 and it's just fine. I'm going to try a 28 once I clean up the correct AP freewheel. And it shifts a 26 equally well when you flip to friction.

I know the Cyclone II works fine with a 13-26 6-speed freewheel. Did the Superb have the same geometry and clearance/

The 23 cog 'suggestion' is derived from the Sprint/Superbe documentation included with the gears. There's a line that suggests performance decreases from 23 to 26 cogs. My experience doesn't reflect that.

I have a late model superbe pro rear derailleur set up on a cassette with a 28t large cog. It shifts well with friction shifters on the stand but I haven't finished the bike so am yet to test it on the road.

As you push the freewheel size to 26 and to 28T, you will probably have to become increasingly sensitive to axle position in (horizontal) dropout, chain length, and tooth drop up front. I ran the Cyclone II with a 48-45-34 / 13-15-17-19-21-24 3x6 setup, but doubt I could have gone any bigger in back.
