Contract built Rossin?
Picked up this Rossin this weekend. Nice bike, but without any of the details normally seen on Rossins, like lug windows, pantoing, R cutouts or even chrome.
I have or had several bikes - Tommasini, Viner, and Pinarello which have been identified as sub-contracted frames and was wondering if anybody had info on this for Rossin. I'm guessing a date of either late 80's or leading to the Rossin sale in 92. Description: Serial number 243 58 (58 c-t so that's Italian!) No ridges in the tubing but does seem to be double butted, No tube decal. It looks like SIX ridges at the bottom of the fork stem. Campy dropouts front and rear 27.2 Gipiemme seatpost (wonder if it''s the only original component) Italian thread BB 126, 7 speed spread Most components are 1991 105, except for the older DA RD Specialized BB, headset and stem. Could be a repaint? If you are on FB, search for the "Vintage Rossin Steelbikes" group. Lots of info there!

Might be repaint, but no color down in the seat tube.
Decal backing is cut echoing the outline of the graphics. Applied to the group. |

don't know why but "contour-cutting the decal film" sounds like something to check and confirm if Rossin typically did that.
Cause it's hand-work that somebody (like me) would do with aftermarket decals I bought but did a factory operation like Rossin do it or have their decal-supplier do it to the decals they ordered? And are you certain there are 6 ridges in the steerer and not 5, and do they spiral? Cause 6 usually means something other than typical Columbus (SL, SLX, SP, SPX, TSX, etc.) steerers. I believe common knowledge has it that: Ishiwata has five straight ridges; Tange has six helical ridges, Columbus has five helical ridges. But that may not be 100% conclusive |
Counted 6, and it looks like a hexagon from the bottom. I got lazy, but will drop the fork later today.

I'll check the details on my 1982, especially the BB work, brake bridge, seat cluster.
It may be the paint, but the work on that seat cluster looks nice and precise. There were a couple of builders who apprenticed under Rossin. That's all I know, but I'll check. Not very much like my 1989, but there are a lot of Rossins. Thanks to jonny7 for the FB group heads up. |
Pulled out the fork, but you probably heard me when the the uncaged bearings went everywhere.
And, a waste of time since there was no marking on the steering tube. But I did spend more time with the Bulgier '88 catalog, and realized that the Cromor model had no chrome on the frame and the fork in the catalog has the same triangle window as mine. The pantographing is what makes me wonder. Even the Cromor model pictured has significant engravatures present.
