I think like all high end bikes--sold as a frame only, and built up by the buyer.

Did Merckx sell lower-end bikes complete with components? I don't know.

All the Merckx racing bikes I've seen back in the day--like the 7-11 team--were equipped with Dura Ace.

Those bikes inspired me to see that I didn't need to hang Campy parts on a European frame.

Depending on hear of manufacture, complete bikes were available with customer choice of either Campagnolo (NR or SR) or Shimano (DA).
Many European Merckx bikes were delivered to customers with Shimano 600/Tricolor, not sure if those were done by dealers or factory.
But yeah, after the mid 80’s- perhaps with the advent of indexed 7400- Shimano was offered

Yep and still offered in 1990 as well, I would bet it was a thing for a long time.
