Tire width for Miyata 210?
 

I plan to buy a 1986 (I think) 210 this Sunday. Will the frame and wheel accommodate a little wider tire than stock? I'm not sure of stock size. Is stock good enough? I like a little wider tire when getting off pavement on occasion, like the Katy Trail, which is chat. The C & O Canal towpath was not paved, either, and my Specialized tires handled it well. I had 700X35C on my old Specialized Expedition, and I liked that size. Had the frame fit me better, I would've never sold it. I bought it used in '86 and didn't know about how size mattered, but ended up keeping it for over 20 years, anyway. The 210 reminds me of my Specialized. Looking forward to local rides and some touring. I currently have a Raleigh C-10 hybrid with twist grip select shift and handlebars that are not ideal for touring. It likes to jump out of gear with the slightest twist. Aggravating to say the least.

27 1/18ths. They are 27" wheels on the 86 210. So that would be 28mm? I think some people have been able to convert to 700c though, so I'd think it would take at least 32s.

It will probably fit 27 x 1 1/4 without a problem even though it may have originally came with 1 1/8. I have an '85 610 and it easily fits 1 1/4. That is 32mm if you switch to 700c. There's a recent thread where someone did that.

thanks, I bought the bike yesterday and it is pristine, blue paint and brightwork are clean as new. Tires are 27 x 1 1/4. Is the 27" wheel same as 700C? If so, I can mount some 35s without buying new wheels.

27" wheels are 8 mm larger in diameter than 700c wheels.

Or you could just get new 27 1 1/4 tires. That might be cheaper.

Good quality 27 x 1 and 1/4 inch tires are available. Panaracer Pasela is usually the top choice, but Continental, Schwalbe, and others also make good 27 inch tires.
