Reynolds 653 having a 26.8mm seatpost
I'm starting work on my Pfeiffer frameset build this week and discovered that no seatpost bigger than 26.8mm fits in the Reynolds 653 seat tube.
The 26.8 fits snugly, no wobble even under force with just an inch of engagement, leading me to believe that it is actually just that size and not deformed in any way.
Both ears look straight and parallel under the bolt heads, and the slot is of an even width with the bolt tightened.
So I'm wondering if perhaps the 653 tubeset might use a dbl-butted seat tube like Tange 2 does (also using a 26.8mm post).
Or, who knows, perhaps this big custom frame got beefed up with a different tubing used in this area(??) ...the 653 decal appears at the bottom of the seat tube.
I'm telling myself that the builder probably did not install the seat tube upside-down, but I might probe the ID for that possibility if I don't get the right answer!
Right now I am struggling with doing a modern/black/carbon build or an 8s Ergo build. The frame is 126mm (from the late 1980's from my discovery process).
I happen to be working replacing a cracked rear rim today on a Campag 8s wheelset that came from a swap-meet with a rare, HG-style 13-28t genuine Campagnolo 8s cassette on it. If I can find a low-profile rim for it in black to match the front rim then I will go Ergo at 130mm, otherwise I will go with Shimano 10s on a 126mm 7s hub wheelset (silver Campag Lambda rims on 640x hubs).
A traditional silver build will un-wed me from using the custom 110mm stem (I would prefer a little shorter, maybe 105mm stem on this big frame), I'll have to order a zero offset seatpost for this frame anyway which might be black or silver.
Here you can see the original stem installed, the tt length is a long 58cm and the seat tube is fairly steep so plenty of reach without a long stem.
You can also see this season's growing swap-swag pile starting to block the outside door to my basement workshop!
