$15 Bianchi

My son just picked up this Bianchi for $15. Can anyone help identify the model? There are no stickers with the model name. Cr-mo, Made in Taiwan, stem shifters. All parts appear to be original except maybe the saddle. TIA.

nearly all Formosan contract builds performed by either Giant or Merida

appears late '70's

carries the Piaggio symbol; Bianchi's Piaggio period commenced ~'78 IIRC

our Ed White experts shall be along momentarily with some solid information regarding the machine...

the cycle's anterior hub is a Sansin Matsumoto product

the rear cannot be seen clearly eno' to identify maker

the cycle's gear ensemble is Shimano

one does not usually see Matsumoto and Shimano bits on the same machine as the two manufacturers are members of differing keiretsu

bicycle makers typically stay within one trade group for kitting of a model in order to get the best possible price for the fittings

when they mix trade groups their costs go up

this trade publication advert shows the members of the group to which Shimano belongs

That is one solid machine for $15 bucks, congrats.

Not to be nosy but did he pick it up because he wanted a ride (fantastic score) or because he was hoping it was worth more? (Ok score).

Curious what that second position of the serial number is. An under-struck and partly-paint-filled zero, perhaps? That would be consistent with a KHS-made Bianchi, February 1984, according to Asian Serial Number Guide . None of the other Bianchi options seem to match, nor do Giant or Merida.

Little of both really. I mean, who can pass up a $15 Bianchi?

Bikes: a couple

From what I can see of it, it could be a sansin low flange hub in the rear
The nutted axle on that lower level bike could be appropriate. I wonder which is correct to the bike?
