Congratulations!

I retired in March and couldn't be happier.

But I'm amazed that I'm still busy enough that I haven't been riding nearly as much as I thought i would. And have yet to embark on any other planned bike related projects. Minutia multiplies to absorb any seemingly excess time.

(I tired to post with 500 images but limited to only 10) :p

You're not retiring, just starting your next career.

Nicely done...
I am just over a year away... but it wouldn't be terrible if it came sooner...
my plan is to stop getting up and going to a place of work...

Andy_K 08-18-23 02:59 PM

Congratulations on a well-deserved change of pace! I'll look around the garage and see what frames I have that need butchering. I'm sure I can keep you busy. :thumb:

All play and no work?...good stuff.

Well, just got outboarded. Sounds like something the Geneva Convention outlawed, no? I won’t miss the constant corporate reworking of the English language. Reduction in force? We fired a bunch of people, etc. No more badge to get in and out of a building, MS Office and Teams are gone from my phone. No more CFTs with SMEs, weekly reports, performance reviews, staff meetings and 1:1s.

Nap time.

I'm not sure what the exact letter salad applied in my case, but I got my little taste of it when the wishful thinking about the pandemic wore off at my previous employer - except trying to find a replacement job was almost a full-time effort. I envy you retirees, and I have a few more years before I plan to join you. Please continue to provide inspiration. :thumb:

Doc, I don't hate you anymore :D.

More time with my wife, more time in the Atelier, and more time to ride.

I did 4 years in data science, then about 35 in DSP in the semiconductor industry (TRW LSI Products, Raytheon Semiconductors, Fairchild, Logic Devices Inc., Pulse~Link, etc.). I am enjoying my encore career teaching upper division and graduate level courses in electrical engineering and computer science. I make about half as much money as I could in industry, but I don't miss the unrelenting pressure I experienced in a couple of startups I worked for. I don't blame you for hanging it up. My (Hewlett-Packard lifer, 1985 IEEE president) uncle's advice, which he himself followed, was to retire when work was no longer fun.

If you ever find yourself missing the TLAs you can always browse the Park Tool website to look at a BTS-1, DAG-3, or FFS-2. Just be careful with the Frame Alignment Gauge or you might get sent for sensitivity training.

Don't be like me. The same character flaw that makes me take on bare-frame bicycle resurrections also makes me take on home improvement projects, gardening projects, construction projects for the kids and grandkids, photography projects, and educational projects. As a result I have less "free time" than ever. Now firmly into my seventh decade I have less energy for all those projects.

Naps and bike rides are my salvation.

Good for you! I retired at the end of 2021 with no regrets. I visited my old office today at lunch for the first time since I retired.

Spaghetti Legs 08-18-23 05:52 PM

You retired? First I’ve heard of it.

Congrats and enjoy!

Ya know, when the tool is down and you are the customer in the fab. Knowing TPS was on the job made you feel better. Just saying.

Insidious C. 08-18-23 06:09 PM

I expected this would topic be about a new set of tires. Regardless, congrats gugie! I would have liked to buy you lunch tho.

Now gugie can be a full-time bike tour organizer/.travel agent and still be a part-time bike butcher. And an occasional ice-bag-hugger. ;)

Congrats, gugie. I'm about a year behind you, give or take, depending on how long it takes to dispose of the last couple cases . . . .
