Picking up a Sekai 2400 on Tuesday
Want to build a gravel bike with Panaracer Gravelking SS tires. On the pictures it seems to have reasonable clearance and should pick a smidgen more if I go from 27" to 700c.
For those that own one of these, how fat a tire can I fit in it?

I think you need to get the bike first. Geometry can be different from year to year or even size to size.

That’s the bike my wife got as a college graduation present in 1983. Frame is hanging in the basement, so I can check clearance. Pretty sure it came with 700c wheels that year.

Here are some photos from the ad:
For daughter. Basically I'll deal with whatever ends up being but 'm hoping for 27" tires, which would buy us a smidgen more space for fatter on 700c. I think I spotted the rear derailleur to be an 1982 Suntour Mountech . Frame is Tange Champion, which is Japanese for double butted chromoly, not a bad one.
I'm probably going to flat bar this bike, well see how it feels. I don't know what standard the crank is but it looks like it can take a smaller ring.

might be a good 650b conversion : need to measure for a 650b wheelset and get some tektro R559s. good chance it could take 38 - 42mm tires

That's a big jump from 27". I do have calipers that can easily do the 27~700 (4mm extra reach) but 27~650b is about a full inch difference, 23mm. Even 700c to 650b is not a trivial conversion. My favorite and easiest conversion is from 26" to 650B.
Panaracer Gravel King do have a wide range of sizes. I'm just hoping I can get away with 35mm (38mm actual) but it will not be the end of the world if it doesn't work.

If it had 27s those old sekais will usually do 700by35 and fenders. If it's a later model, all bets are off.

Sekai may have different clearance but you can easily measure it once you have the bicycle.
