Cranksets

I just purchased a late 80's early 90's Rossin Strada Professional (SLX) and am looking to replace the crankset to a more manageable 50-34. My internet search has come up with scant few cool looking alloy cranksets that make the grade. I would like to stay with the silver color or even a red, but without breaking the bank. There seems to be a lot of mountain bike cranks in a variety of iterations but not many road ones. Any suggestions?

I think you'd be looking for a 110 BCD crankset.

It looks like you can get a low of 33 and a high of 54.

Stronglight Impact is a good option at less than $100: https://www.tradeinn.com/bikeinn/en/...set/137172518/

Sugino Mighty Tour is pretty nice.

Bikes: Yes, please.

The Campagnolo Victory and Triomphe cranks have a 116mm BCD, and will take a 35T. Miche makes rings for them.

Sugino XD2 and Alpina as well.

In the '80s lots of mid priced road bikes came with SR and Sugino 110BCD cranks, if you want a lower cost alternative to new. But you'd need rings.

That's a solid price on a good looking crank. The rings alone run close to $60. Tempting.

I agree the Sugino XD cranks are good looking and excellent quality. Most of these are triples but it’s easy enough to remove the inner ring, bolts, and spacers.

The XD600 is a triple, but all the XD2s are doubles.

Another option at less than $100 if you can live with 165mm arms is BikinGreen: https://www.ebay.com/itm/124754009124

Also, I've put the BikinGreen 46/30 chainrings on a 110bcd crank I already had: https://www.ebay.com/itm/124193323950

Fwiw, BikeInn does not list 165mm, but the Stronglight Impact cranks also come in 165mm versions if you like shorter cranks. You can find them elsewhere on the web. I was considering this when I built a bike for my daughter.

Thanks for all the quick replies! Some of these I have already looked into. I guess I was hoping to find something along the lines of the Raceface Atlas, but for road bikes. I'm very sick of all black groupsets. Just hoping to add a little sparkle to the old girl!

Well, you said you wanted to avoid “breaking the bank,” which I assume rules out the high zoot options such as Rene Herse, White Industries, and SunXCD, all of which are silver.

I think I got a 50/34 compact Veloce from you didn’t I?

Not polished, but very nice and rock solid. Putting it on the Raleigh International.

Not sure if the OP would be interested but they can be de-anodized and polished nicely (didn’t do it to this one).

Haha. That was in my stupid buying frenzy days and the reason for sanity finally arriving in the mail. Though I am glad I bought it now...

Can someone please explain how the BikinGreen chainrings can go down to 30 teeth for a 110 BCD spider? Anyone got clear photos? The website pictures don't show how it's achieved.

Looking at the images on ebay, it would appear that the inner chainring is offset inward to make a gap between the crank mounting tab and the chain, and then the built in mounting stud is probably relieved on top as well for the chain. The outer ring probably has an undersized chainring bolt shaft for that clearance, and then has sloped faces that work like current Shimano chainrings to guide the chain to the left displaced inner ring.

The overall effect is that the inner ring's chainline is offset maybe 2-3mm.

Velo Orange and IRD make fluted compact cranks if you want a little older school look. I also have (not for sale) a Velo Orange polished smooth compact crank that looks very nice. Not produced any more but you might find a used one on eBay or elsewhere.

Thanks for the photo and explanation about the 30 tooth ring on 110 BCD spider..... I'm sorry to say I still don't understand exactly how it's done. Probably need to see one apart or partially fitted.
Really, I'm asking because I wondered if it's something that could be "bodged" up at home.... Asking for a friend🤔

I don't think you could do it at home because you won't have the ramped inner surface of the outer chainring to guide the chain to the offset inner ring.

Any thought about getting a perfectly wonderful 130 BCD "classic" crankset, sticking on a 38 tooth small ring, then adding two or three teeth to the bigger cogs in the rear?
