Cranksets: NR and Record Differences?

Hi all wanting to purchase a 5 arm Campagnolo pre CPSC crankset replacement for the International and are confused by these names and how to ID them. Is there any difference? Cheers.

I believe there's no such designation by Campagnolo, the "Strada" crankarms are the same, whether they by Record, Nuovo Record, Super Record. The chainrings are different for Super Record.

Edited to add: this is true after 1966. Before that, there were 151 bcd Strada cranksets and they had some minor differences as well. I mostly come across the "newer" models (70s or 80s) so I forgot about those.

That’s my understanding as well. Crank arms are Record and the chainrings are NR or SR.

Pretty sure this is also true with hubs?

When the Nuovo Record rear derailleur came out in 1967, people started applying the name to the entire Record group, but I don't know if there were ever any other components that actually had the NR moniker. Super Record also used a lot of the same components including the crank arms. The Record cranks were basically the same from 1958 to whenever they stopped making Super Record, except that they changed the bolt circle diameter from 151 mm to 144 mm in about 1967..

I will discard the very early cranks and the 151 BCD units. plenty of stuff there that is interesting but not relevant.

As noted earlier, Nuovo Record was a bottom up name used by bike shops to streamline the explanation of the Group.

ok, Pre CPSC will have NO date marks or a numeral in a diamond 5 or under.
Gets tricky with 6 in a diamond, the transition year.
the Pre cranks will have a bigger, "ant hill" at the bore. the Post CPSC will be much lower.
if original chainrings, there will be a pin to positioned behind the crank arm to prevent a chain jam. earlier cranks with the chainring pin will need to be filed back to clear.

what was really going on?
the post CPSC spindle is longer, about 115mm but the broach at the bore was moved, providing the extra space between the chainring and the back of the arm to provide room for the formed lip of the revised cage.

the Q factor of the earlier cranks is narrower compared to the later.

to add to the hot mess, not all 115mm spindles have the same dimensions to the tapers. Shield logo... beware.

then there is Super Record... but that would be telling.

So this is Post CPSC?

yes, known by the low rise to the bore, and there is nothing like fresh Campagnolo.
1977 date code at least on the arm that I can read.

The "Nuovo Record" designation only applies to the bottom bracket, the crank arms themselves are the same across Record, Nuovo Record and Super Record cranksets. There are, however, differences between pre- and post-CPSC crank arms, as described in this document:

It is too bad there was no graphic representation to go along with the text.

I am working on one to assist in visualizing the modifications.

one issue is that the spindle is often referenced to the outside diameter lip of the races, this is an uncontrolled surface. this is persistent no matter the brand, not a huge deal but I have found variations.

I assert that the arms have at least three variations, even from 1967 forward- the last iteration I refer to Super Record, there were no more older ring chainsets produced. no flutes ( two variations of branding) that on the backside of Drive side arm has CNC milling to arrest the classic crank arm cracking at the spider/ arm crotch.

for Vintage Raleigh

he has identified the post CPSC set he is seeking.

Thankyou all for the responses.
Looks like I'll just have to wait until a Pre CPSC crankset becomes available for the 1975 International.
