Happy birthday to the Corps!
It's been 48 years since I stepped on the yellow footsteps at MCRD San Diego, minutes away from losing my hair and getting issued some green clothes and meeting a few Drill Instructors that were very intent on turning me into a Marine!
After a few months of learning to be a Marine in San Diego, I went on to learn about the basics of electronics and aircraft, and eventually ended up in sunny Arizona working on A-4 Skyhawks. I learned valuable life lessons about working hard and how to troubleshoot problems, but I also met a few other bike nerds who taught me about pace lines, track stands, proper bike clothes, etc. My Raleigh Gran Sport served me well!
One of the benefits of being in a training squadron was the potential for getting a ride in the back seat of our trainer jets. The flights tended to involve some violent maneuvers, with potential for airsickness, but it was still fun. Also, it was kinda cool to get fitted up with the flight gear...
The view over the nearby mountains was pretty good, especially around sunset...

Politcial content is inherently adversarial. The Marine Corps, having been dedicated to the defense of the country for as long as it has existed, regardless of what political party happened to be in power at any given point, is and always has been above politics.

I did not start this thread as a political statement, nor is it. I'm celebrating the service of my fellow "Swarthy Soldiers from the Sea". I was in the Navy but patrolled block by block through Fallujah, Iraq with Marines. Acknowledging the service of Marines is the same as acknowledging the service of veterans of all military branches. That said, I hope you all had an honorable and rewarding Veterans Day. I missed the 250th birthday message for the US Navy and to my fellow sailors, I wholeheartedly apologize. But celebrating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the Marines is no more political than celebrating my own birthday. // END RANT.

Last time I checked, the USMC was founded by the government of the USA, ergo this thread has political content. And my deleted comment was about the apparently inherent disrespect afforded this organisation by the presence of a certain visitor at the White House on November 10. My Miyata 610 and Alumicross were made by the same company that made gun barrels which fired upon my grandfather's cruiser in WWII 40 years prior. Is that political? Is my desire to ride a well made Japanese bike produced by Miyata a political statement? The same goes for nearly all historic bicycle manufacturers, as the skill of builders was gained through the production of weapons of war. Your strawman suggests every thread on this forum is political, in this case.
If you want to get pedantic and really shut the thread down, the Marine Corps was founded by the Continental Congress of the 13 American Colonies. The existence of the USMC is inherently apolitical, as it has remained since before we had a President of these United States. What people bring up about the actions of the Marines, and the orders given by the CINC as well as US Congress, THAT is political.
Again, I started this thread to celebrate service to this nation. If you don't like the thread, feel free to not participate.
Here's my Miyata 610 to keep it on topic in C&V.
