This has certainly turned into a fun thread! It has all the best aspects of C&V. Nice little related rabbit trails to follow which lead back to the main path.
bulgie I'm looking forward to seeing your Twinn unveiled. Sounds like a great project. ShannonM the lack of a Suntour 36T A sprocket literally makes no sense. Why would Suntour jump from 34T to 38T without a 36T? After all they produced 30-32-34 and 38, and rated a few of their RDs at 36T. As best I know, the biggest Shimano made at that time was 34T, Sachs made a 32T, and Regina a 31T, which were the three big freewheel producers in the late '80s to early '90s. A 36T from Suntour would seem obvious. steelbikeguy that's cool that you were able to meet Chuck and grab a photo or your bike next to his with the unique and custom RD. I use a mirror on my glasses for all rides, but I've never used his version. |

Suntour produced, and advertised, a rear derailleur rated for a 36-tooth cog that nobody made? I mean, if Shimano had one, it would make sense in an "ours can do that too" kinda way. Still stupid, but I can see it. But if nobody else made a 36? That's crashing-into-Mars-because-units level stupid. I know, and live by, the old saw about malice and incompetence, but when you're dealing with this kind of bogosity, how the frack can you tell? This is so dumb that the more I learn about it, the more it micturates me off. The only reason that this isn't a canonical example of Occam's Spork is the amount of exposition you'd have to do for anyone who wasn't a total bike nerd. --Shannon |

Yes, in theory the 38-tooth cog would fit a New Winner Pro freewheel body making a 12-38 Ultra-7 or 11-38 “Regular” 6-speed possible. Not that I ever tried that…
(Pastor Bob- have you ever seen a 11-tooth NWP “Z” cog? It was on the cog board but I can’t remember seeing one for real.) Here's the rare and highly sought after, wide-range New Winner 7-speed is criterium ready, and can double for gravel grinding. :p https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...00e315d016.jpg From racing criteriums, to mountain summits, to stump pulling, this baby does it all. May I ask, "How low (or high) can you go--- and still be vintage?" One X Twelve? What's the big deal?!? Pair this New Winner with a 50-30 crank set and you can conquer the world. :innocent: |

That must have been after the New Winner era? To explain the cogs a bit, SunTour made some cogs that included a threaded extension that another cog could be threaded onto. See the drawing below to get a hint of what the L and X cogs were.... https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...26667b5f9c.jpg This is from the New Winner manual and cog board. pastorbobnlnh woah. Double cool. Is this another you have built? What kind of mech have you used with this freewheel? Have you written up a thread about it? If not, I hope you do!
steelbikeguy Id love to mess around and learn how to make cool freewheels, but I know I can’t start a new project for a couple months. If your offer/inventory still stands I’d love to take you up on them. |

Wow, Bob, that’s a unique 7-speed freewheel with 8 cogs!

It is wider than a normal 5-speed gap between sprockets. The remaining gaps are the normal Suntour Ultra spacing.

For example, I've got a number of various flavors of 16 tooth cogs. About 11 threaded cogs (T16), 8 of the dual threaded X cogs, and 15 of the 5 spline A cogs. I'm a little surprised that the T16 cogs are left, but not many folks are using X16 or A16 cogs. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...80ba3b20fa.jpg Still, if someone is looking for a specific cog, let me know. I'll also note that the spacers are also important, especially if you are coming up with a new cog arrangement. I've got a weird assortment of spacers too, so let me know what is needed. I'll just assume that Pastor Bob has a better inventory than me! Steve in Peoria |
